I have been using this veterinarian Dr. Randla and the Pet Resort for well over a year now. The staff is so friendly and all about their patients! I have seen so many comments about how pricey things are here, and yes, they CAN be pricey. Horseshoe lake is the only place for compassionate and loving care.

We just brought our 2 dogs in just to get there nails clipped our oldest dog rose was very nervous, we asked for a muzzle so we could hear the nurse. Rose doesn't like the nurse for her to calm down she needs to be talked to and petted but they refused to and well in general made it worse. The nurse said she didn't feel comfortable to clip there nails which is strange cuz our old vet in Godfrey was great with rose and yes she had a muzzle on even then.
Our youngest dog was fine but she only barks if her sister started barking. I definitely recommend the Daniel Randell veterinary clinic in Godfrey. But to this place it was our first and very last visit with the horseshoe lake animal hospital.

I have been using this veterinarian (Dr. Randla) and the Pet Resort for well over a year now. The staff is so friendly and all about their patients! I have seen so many comments about how pricey things are here, and yes, they CAN be pricey. but like the old saying goes, "you get what you pay for." I have been to "cheaper" vets before, and when on a tight budget, that's what you need to do!
But the care wasn't always the best and I would end up having to pay more in the end because all of the required needs/shots/paperwork wouldn't be met. HSL DOES meet those requirements for yearly shots and rabies tag updates! I once had a yearly exam for my pup, Chase, and the staff was able to help me stay within my budget for the exam, getting only the necessary treatments/shots needed to get him by for the year, along with an exam to make sure he wasn't infected with whip-worm after being exposed to a positive patient (I was not aware of the whip-worm infection until AFTER my pets had a play-weekend with a friend). Dr. Randla is always friendly and gets down on the floor with his patients, to their level, to help them feel more at ease during the exam. Megan, one of the techs, is ALWAYS in the room with my fur-babies - she's the BEST!
I will only schedule appointments when I know she's working and when Dr. Randla can see them. The Pet Resort is another WONDERFUL part to this business. I have tried other kennel facilities before, and my poor babies usually end up being separated from each other, stored in (large, but still cramped) wire kennels and didn't get as much play time as I was told they would.
The Pet Resort offers so many add-on packages for your pet's stay! The first time I used their Resort, my dogs were able to board in a shared kennel - not just some wire cage, but a full on 10'X'10' ROOM with beds, toys, and plenty of space to spread out and play during their 8:30PM regularly scheduled "let's play loudly and make mom's house a mess" play time they do at home. Megan, the tech, used to work in the Resort regularly, so she would always send me updates when my babies would stay here - text updates and photos!
The best part of the Resort, that I don't see much with other kennel facilities, is they don't charge a cancellation fee. It's like they KNOW that sometimes unexpected things come up, which require cancellations on appointments and reservations, and they DON'T CHARGE YOU FOR IT! This is a HUGE help! Just recently, I called to block off a LONG time period for boarding this summer, because I wasn't sure yet when our family would take a vacation during this blocked off time.
I was able to secure a shared room for my fur-babies for a 12-day window until I had solid dates. When I called to finalize my dates, it was SO easy! I wasn't charged extra for changing my reservation time slot and even verified that, if I had to cancel my reservation for any reason - even the morning of the reservation, I would NOT be charged any cancellation fees!
I can't tell you how much of a breath of fresh air that was hearing that! I seriously won't go anywhere else! Between Dr. Randla and Megan, this facility is the ONLY place my fur-babies will go!

TL;DR Dishonest business practices. I would recommend all new customers to ask about how this facility bills. Be aware that they bill for exams each visit (even just when getting shots) if your dog is a puppy. Be aware that they do not tell you what they are charging you for. We adopted our pup about a month ago. The adoption agency recommended Horseshoe clinic and they paid for the initial exam.
We received the initial exam 25 Feb. At that exam, we made a follow-up appointment for a rabies and parvo shot in 2 weeks. We had the appointment this past Friday 11 March (2 weeks since last exam). Everyone was very friendly during the appointment. They said I'd have to make an additional appointment for the rabies vaccine because my dog was too young.
No biggie. When I paid, the bill was $85. I thought that was high for a shot but we are new pet parents so I didn't think too much into it until I saw the invoice. I looked at the receipt and they charged me $59 for an exam and a "clinical brief" in addition to the shot. The vet was with us in our room for 2 minutes MAX and asked if we had any concerns.
We said no. I was confused why he was asking us this if we were just there for a shot because our pup was JUST SEEN 2 weeks ago. I thought he was just being nice. After seeing the invoice, I called the clinic to ask why I had a $59 charge when all I made the appointment for was get her booster. They said a dog HAS to have an exam before getting a shot.
I said okay but I felt tricked since I was not made aware of that beforehand! I called a different animal clinic because that seems weird for the clinic to charge me without telling me. The local place I called said they do NOT charge for the exam when it is just for a shot. To be clear, my appointment time was 330pm and I was out of the clinic at 337pm.
I did not ask for my dog to receive an additional exam. I spoke with Mr. JP today and he said it is their policy to charge the exam fee for every vaccine appointment for puppies. He apologized for the staff not explaining this to me but did not provide further remedy for the situation. He said, because they took my dog to the back to get the shot, the vet did more of an exam in the back. Again, all the staff were friendly but their billing practices are sneaky and predatory. I would not recommend this clinic to anyone due to their poor customer service practices.

I just got my pup Emma last August. The shelter encouraged me to use Horseshoe Lake Animal Hospital, at least for the first visit. They are not terribly close, but I'm glad I went. They are very professional, friendly and reasonably priced. I love that they use texts and email to help with communications. I had questions for the vet and they were answered with no cost - who does that?! I will be keeping Emma with them.

We have been taking our two beloved pit bulls here since 2014, and we really appreciate this place. They're staff, including admin, techs, pharmacy, and doctors, are all consistently kind and professional, and we feel they care about our pets. They seem to us to be on the pricier end of vet care, but we are typically comfortable paying it for good quality. Dr Randla has been a favorite of our family, but since the clinic got more busy with the pandemic (seemingly universal with vets), we have seen other vets at HLAH and always had a good experience. We would also do grooming there but when we've tried they haven't been able to accommodate larger dogs (ours are ~65lbs). Thank you Horseshoe Lake!

The shelter I adopted my elderly dog from uses Horseshoe Lake for their medical needs. After one visit with my dog, there was no reason for me to look elsewhere! The entire staff is knowledgeable and patient with any and all questions. I once used the after hours emergency line and was greeted with a calm, empathetic vet who comforted me as I assessed my dog.
Her typical vet called to follow up the next day to make sure she was back to normal! The techs are also so kind and actively listen to concerns. The vet helps prioritize services if financing is an issue (they also accept Scratch Pay and Care Credit!) The care is exceptionally great and prices are competitive with similar clinics back home. I cannot give enough praise to this staff. I even switched my senior cat over to their care!
