Paws Place At any one time, we currently have over fifty dogs and puppies at the shelter and in foster homes. Adoption fees don't even begin to cover these costs. Paw's Place is capable to do the work we do only because of volunteers and contributions from animal lovers like you. Donations in any amount are desperately needed. Because of our IRS 501 c 3 designation, all of your donatons are tax deductible!
Services
We're glad that you are interested in adopting a new pet from us. The following information is requested so that we can assist you in the selection of a new pet. The application form and consultation with a Paw's Place representative is designed to help us determine if the adoption is in the animal's best interest, and to assist you in finding an animal most compatible with your lifestyle.
We are located at 242 George II Hwy in Winnabow, which is about (15 minutes), 17 miles south of downtown Wilmington. Volunteers are highly valued within our organization, as you are the 'heart beat' to keep us going. We want your experience to be safe, fun, and rewarding as possible. While we appreciate someone wanting to volunteer, we would like for he/she to be able to volunteer at least 9 hours per month on an ongoing basis. This is our policy due to the administrative workload associated with training new volunteers as well as coordinating the daily volunteer schedule.

The Paws Place foster family is a very important part of our organization. It is through the generous hearts and homes of our volunteers; we ensure that animals who come into our care will be taken care of in the interim before going into their forever home. All we ask is for you to open your heart and your home to a dog in need of a second chance.
If you rent, please provide documentation that you have the owner's permission for this dog to live in your home. Are you willing to have a representative of Paw's Place come to see where the pet will be living?

I have told many people how clean and thorough this adoption agency is. I felt great about the staff and the facility and this dog has brought such joy to my life it's incredible. Milo and I take many walks a day trying to get him used to bikes, golf carts, and fast moving children. He is very food motivated and gets distracted with small treats during our training sessions.

He loves to ride in the car with me and loves to snuggle. We have gone to the beach, parks, concerts and a restaurant or two. Thank you for reaching out we have both bonded quite well!

Paws Place was great to work with and really Caroline about the dogs they take in. I adopted Hershey from them in October 2021 and they have actually checked in to make sure that everything was going well. I could imagine life without my sweet girl now.

We adopted our sweet girl Lilly from Paws Place The staff and volunteers were super friendly, helpful, and all of the dogs were loved and well taken care of. They made the adoption process easy and continue to be supportive! Great Place, great mission, great pups and people!

We have adopted 2 beautiful dogs from Paws Place and both times have been a wonderful experience. Easy, fairly quick and the workup that they do on the dogs is terrific. They really try to match up the best pet to the best human! They are incredibly compassionate and dedicated. Don't shop - ADOPT!

We adopted a bonded pair, Odie and Chichi, a year ago. The adoption process was thorough and friendly. They spent some time with us going over their records and clearly have the best interests of the dogs at heart. We love our boys!

Our adoption was a tribute to the commitment of the staff and volunteers at Paws Place to their animals. We were very interested in a particular dog, but he was so crushingly anxious it just wasn't clear if he was going to be able to join a family. At my initial visit, the volunteer who took me around talked non-stop about what a sweet natured dog he was.

When I took my husband to meet him they ALL came through - staff, volunteers, some staff again. Our dog, Remi, never came out of the corner but we took the chance because ALL those people believed he would come around. And he has - and has proved a wonderful, sweet, and loyal member of our family, our neighborhood, and most parks in town!

What a fantastic facility. What a fantastic staff. My husband and I had waited a very, very, very long time before deciding to adopt again. Paws Place was such a joy to work with. They take such great care of the dogs they rescue while they're waiting for their forever homes. When we toured the facility, we were told of dogs that had been then almost 4 years that we still awaiting adoption.

I don't know of any rescues that take such great care of dogs that long while waiting for a permanent home. And to think they do so much of this with a minimal paid staff and mostly volunteer team. They also appear to be one of the few rescues that are willing to take on the cost associated with rehabilitation of dogs due to injury, genetical problems, heart worms, etc.

We found our dog, Harley, at Paws Place in December of 2021. She had been found wandering in Dublin County. Poor thing was so skinny and was clearly dealing with some stiff joints. Paws Place got her on the road to recovery and my husband and I took over from there. We are eternally grateful to Paws Place for allowing Harley to join our family.

I have adopted two precious senior dogs from Paws Place. While we may not know their past, Paws Place saw their present needs and the future they could have. I will be eternally grateful to Paws Place for that because these pups have brought immeasurable joy to my life - and I like to think that I have done the same for them.

I adopted my sweet pup about 8 months ago from Paw's Place. I'm writing this review because I'm surprised by some of the negative reviews that seem to be about the application/approval process. As a rescue dog owner, I was not surprised by their detailed application process. I'm quite grateful for it because it reduces the likelihood of a dog being returned or re-homed. Paw's Place was clear about their expectations, direct, and to the point throughout the process. I highly recommend to anyone looking to rescue a dog!

Do not attempt to adopt through this organization! It will break your heart. My son and I found a precious 8 year old beagle. His profile said he has been there for months and they couldn't understand why no one wanted him. We drove to meet him and bonded with him and him with us. We waited days, sent over vet records, had an email sent from our landlord, sent a copy of our lease and we're willing to pay $225!

They denied me because I purchased my heart worm prevention for my previous dog online (like so many pet owners do) and not from my vet. I tried to appeal and explain this and they wouldn't respond. This organization denied a dog a wonderful and loving home because I purchased meds from somewhere other than the vet. Absolutely despicable when so many homeless dogs need forever homes. Adopt an angel is fantastic and has the real interest of the animals in mind!

This is the best pet adoption center I have ever seen. Their biggest concern is the dogs, and they will do everything they can to make sure a dog goes to the right family. Paws Place uses an extensive background check before sending a dog home, as a place who puts the well being of the dogs over profit should. They are very nice to work with and quick to respond to any questions.

We saw a dog up for adoption on their Facebook page and commented that we would be there the next day. We show up only to be told that because of covid we cant come in and because it's a little rainy out the dogs can't come out (never mind I see 2 people out walking dogs but whatever). We leave and get all the way back home just to receive a message from the owner saying she would like us to some back if we are still interested in seeing the dog. Ok.

We drive all the way back to them, get outside talking to the owner and she is asking us about our 3 dogs we currently have, if they are up to date on shots, etc. I tell them yes that I do all my own shots except rabies and those are done at Brunswick Animal Shelter where we adopted them. It is because of this reason we are informed we are not eligible to adopt the dog because we don't take them to the vet for these services.

So it doesn't count that I have almost 2 acres of land and 3 very happy and healthy, well fed dogs because I save money doing things on my own. So on our way home again as a follow up to my original post on the dogs FB post I say "it didn't work out, I am unable to adopt because I do my own shots", more as an informative thing to others than anything. Going back to see if anyone responded to my post I see that they've been deleted and they've blocked me on Facebook Messenger. This isn't the proper way a shelter wanting people to adopt dogs to treat people who just want to give a dog a good home.

I would definitely read ALL the reviews when looking at this page, because the ones that aren't great are very true. My daughter and I went out there as soon as they opened this morning because I wasn't allowed to see the puppies when I went there on Wednesday (this is Sat.) because there was AN application on each pup.? I would think they'd want multiple applications if the first one went south.but NO, I was told by two of their employees that once the dog as AN app they won't show them or take any other apps. Does this make sense?

Not to me.then I received a very nice message from Bethany there who seems to be the only person who has any sense and she told me that two of the dogs did not have an application (was I given wrong info?) on them and I was able to put in one for them. Which I promptly did, sight unseen (basically, I did see the pups through the fencing on Wed. but wasn't allowed to get to really see them close up). So, now I went out there today to actually SEE the pups up close because who wants a pup they've never seen?

We were "greeted" by a woman who said we couldn't see them because they all had AN app on them, I told her the story, then she said she'd have to go in and ask someone, 15 minutes later as we waited in freezing wind, another lady who looked exactly the same but a different lady (Kathryn) came out and said she'd been briefed last night and all the pups were not to be shown as they already ((yes, again) had AN app.

This "conversation" went on and on for around 10 minutes and she was quite rude. I let her listen to the voicemail I'd received from Bethany and then I felt this is hopeless (as all of the other people who were there to see the dogs were let in immediately to walk around outside (Covid) and see all the dogs). My daughter said she'd adopted her dog from there two years ago to this lady ( as I said let's leave) and all of a sudden the lady changed, (just like Jekyll and Hyde), and said, "do you want to see the dogs"? So, although I was tempted to just get the heck out of there, we we were finally allowed to see the dogs.

I cannot believe the rude and ridiculous behavior of these folks. I am vetted by 10 or more rescues already and to go through this nonsense was that, NONSENSE. My daughter and I are going to make some great skits out of this experience since it was also hilarious! Thanks for some great laughs Paws Place!

We were interested in a dog there. We went in to meet him and really liked him. We applied and they said they needed a vet recommendation so we scheduled appointments for our other dogs to make sure they were caught up on vaccinations because we realized they weren't up to date and didn't want to lose this rescue dog. They denied the application.

Only a few days had passed since we applied. They said we needed to already have it done. We didn't even know we had discrepancies with their shots until they denied our application. They said according to our vet we were past due on shots all the time. We didn't receive calls from the vet. My parents didn't know. The moment they realized it they scheduled to get all our animals shots up to date and started a folder for making sure their shots stay up to date even if we don't get a reminder call.

They are good people and paws place should've given them time to get that in order. They don't know my parents are good people. My recommendation to them is a GRACE PERIOD. If people apply in the future give them a week to get their shots in order. We do our absolute best to take care of our animals. We wish you well and hope you do other dogs better justice in the future. He missed out on a loving home.

I send a e- mail quite awhile ago about Brooklyn never received an acknowledgement. why. I have been a donor for years, I am very upset regarding some of the experiences people have received when trying to adopt from Paws Place. You might want to check your procedures That you use when people want to adopt. My donations are specifically due to my love of animals but if your reviews are not kind and compassionate and professional I will reserve the right to donate and will encourage others to think twice regarding their donations. I expect an answer re Brooklyn What are her issues and what would the benefits be if someone inquired about her adoption.

Paws Place is one of the best shelters I have ever come across. They take immaculate care of their animals and genuinely care about each one. When we adopted from Paws Place and found that the dog was not going to be able to cohabitate with our cat after over a month of attempts, they graciously took her back without judgement and made sure to let us know we were welcome back anytime to try again when we were ready.

The adoption process is longer than most, but that is because they want to make absolutely sure that nothing will happen to their animals down the line. They are cautious, but with good reason. They have been doing this a long time. Love Paws Place!

My husband and I were in search of a rescue dog with intentions of he/she being trained for emotional support for military service members. We were led to Paws Place after seeing a post about Callie. Both my husband and I visited the shelter and had amazing visits. The shelter was amazingly clean and very organized. Our application was completed and a home visit scheduled.

By this time we were overly excited, attached and looking forward to having Callie as a new family member. Had an awesome visit and were waiting for the call to pick up Callie. Sounds like a perfect adoption story right? In steps the "Adoption Team" that sent us a very cold and rude email stating that our application was no longer moving forward, including information that was not accurate.

We were devastated and reached out immediately, to which we were told we would be contacted over 48 hours later. An "Adoption Team" member contacted us to share that we had failed to describe on our application a care plan for Callie if my husband was to be deployed. Are you kidding me? I have never encountered such lack of compassion and professionalism.

So if you are looking to make a difference in the world by adopting and rendering service in the military world, we would encourage looking to adopt from another shelter. It appears that to much power is given to the "Adoption Team" for passing judgement on individuals versus making sure animals are rescued. As of date Callie remains unadopted. My husband and I have adopted since and could not be happier!

Beware: If you already have a dog and he/she has not had distemper/Parvo vaccine (not required by NC law but apparently required by them), don't bother trying to adopt. Although they don't let you know until you've visited, gotten attached to a dog, completed the application, gone through the vet call to ask about it, once they find your dog hasn't had it, they send a very hurtful email stating your application will no longer be considered.

On top of that, they refused to answer our email that we would get her the vaccine if they required it. Never again - the 'committee' with their 'one strike' leaves much to be deserved, and I do mean deserved, by good decent families who ARE capable and would give a pup an excellent home. Our donations and our pet search will now go to our local animal shelter where we apparently should have started. our mistake for not knowing how cruel this rescue would be and how rescues differ from animal shelters.

I would also suggest you check out their Facebook page -- although many families have had good experiences with them, some have experienced the same cruel treatment we did. It's a heartbreaking experience when you know you are a very worthy pet parent and you're treated so badly.

As long as the current Director of Operations (Peggy Durso) is in charge, I highly recommend that you choose a different dog rescue for your volunteer work. I volunteered at Paws Place from August 2014 until July 2018. I walked dogs, I transported a special dog (Tessa) on nearly daily outings in my pickup truck, I conducted neighborhood donations of food and money, I got Paws Place into a national fundraising campaign with the federal government, I donated money, I photographed dogs for the website and Facebook and I conducted the Holiday Food Drive.

I was "fired" as a volunteer by Peggy Durso after a volunteer meeting because I asked her a question about how she handled one dog versus another. Peggy Durso told me I was not welcome to return. In addition, I am not allowed to visit with Tessa any longer after spending almost four years with her. Peggy Durso is being extremely cruel to Tessa, who waits for my visits. DO NOT VOLUNTEER HERE!
