Between 1 and 6 years of age, our pets are in the prime of their lives. This is the time they venture out of adolescence into adulthood. But it is also during this time that some diseases can begin to affect our pet's health. These diseases can go unnoticed in their early stages and, if left undetected, can put your pet's health at risk and even shorten their life.
Your pet's diet has a definite impact on their health. According to a recent study, over half of U.S. cats and dogs are overweight. A few pounds may not mean much to your body, but to your pet, a few pounds can add to a lot of stress to bones and organs. This can be even more stressful with San Antonio's hot spring and summer weather. We have found Purina OM (Overweight Management brand Canine and Feline Formulas) to be very effective in helping to drop those extra pounds.
Vaccinating your pet is a simple procedure and is proven to save lives. Many diseases that were once fatal to dogs and cats are now under control due to modern vaccines. Vaccinating your pet is well worth the financial commitment. Bulverde Animal Hospital offers pet vaccinations to prevent against Kennel Cough, Feline Distemper, and more in Stone Oak, and San Antonio, TX.
Bulverde Animal Hospital is proud to be Country Hills TX's Veterinary Clinic of choice providing pet dental care services for dogs and cats. It's unfortunate, but it is estimated that over 80 percent of pets have significant dental problems. Every day, we are presented with patients for routine vaccinations or other minor afflictions whose oral health is truly cause for alarm.

Dr. Richardson is very knowledgeable and personable. Unlike other vets that I've came across, he will sit down with you, without rushing and take his time to explain exactly what is going on with your dog, and you can tell that he actually cares. It's gonna be a long process for my little angel's recovery but at least I know that he's in good hands!

This office came highly recommended by a neighbor of mine so after going to the same office for over 35 years, I made appointments for my dogs this past Friday. I received verbal confirmation and numerous emails confirming and then reminding me about the appointments. I took off a half a day from work (because finding a great vet is worth time off) and after driving 30 minutes from my home (again, the distance was not an issue if it meant finding a great vet), but when I arrived at my appointment I was told there was no appointment.
I offered to pull up the numerous emails I was sent by their office regarding the appointment, and miraculously the receptionist found my appointment. The receptionist went to the back office and came out to tell me it would be a long wait, an hour or two. I left because if the office can't keep track of a simple appointment, I don't have confidence that they could care for my pets in an efficient and correct manner. It's my understanding that the previous owner passed away. I am guessing the great service left with him.

The doctor lady and lab staff appear to be five star performers. Yet, someone at the front desk neglected to send a referral to the bluepearl specialty hospital for a needed procedure. I usually give five stars on a review as a common courtesy. The missing review star is for the failed service that I received upon my first visit to this business.

I've been taking our 9lb dog and a seriously overweight, diabetic 18 yr old cat to the Bulverde Animal Hospital for over 10 years now and have always been cheerfully greeted by the front desk folks (where I pick up insulin for the cat every month). They are always ready to help or check-in the pets for appointments. Wait time is always minimal and test results are shared as soon as possible. There's been a recent change-over of Vets, but service provided continues to be top-notch.

Dr. Woods was very personable, sensitive and non-judgemental when we took our 12 year old pug in for an overall health checkup. They presented the line item estimate and let us decide which services we could afford with no pressure for services/procedures that could wait. Dr. Woods personally called me to follow-up after our visit. I really appreciated her explaining health and wellness technical terms that i wouldn't have otherwise understood. I would definitely refer Bulverde Animal Hospital to friends and family.

I don't think it could have been any better. Dr. Woods returned my call personally and was able to fit me in the schedule right before lunch to see 8 puppies all at once. She was very thorough and explained everything. At the end of the visit the bill was brought in and discussed with me and I was asked if I wanted the additional labs and meds that she was recommending before being charged for them.
Do to financial reasons I had to decline the labs and was not made to feel pressured about getting them. Dr. Woods and the staff were very kind and I will continue to bring my fur babies to her when needed. Thanks so much for saving my puppies.

These folks have cared for our animals for many years. Dr. Elbel has ALWAYS pinpointed our animals problem almost immediately- no kidding- EVERY TIME! The staff, though there are many pets/clients, always treat me and other I've witnessed as if I'm the most important. I love this clinic and thank them for their tireless work.

The team at Bulverde Animal Hospital is wonderful. I love Dr. Wood! She is always ready to listen when I am concerned for my animals. She doesn't push me into any treatments I'm not absolutely comfortable with. Her bedside manner with animals AND pet lovers is as kind and sweet and straightforward as you can get. On top of that, the prices are affordable, so you get top tier care without going broke AND they help you understand all the costs BEFORE the treatment so you can make choices and not end up with painful sticker shock at check out.

We took our dog to Bulverde Animal Hospital for an ear problem. We got booked for an appointment right away. The office staff was very friendly and caring. We came to the appointment early and we're put in a room immediately. The vet tech was very nice and friendly. The veterinarian was professional and personable and everyone took very good care of our dog. We were given options on treatment and the cost of treatment was reasonable. I plan to use Bulverde Animal Hospital as our primary vet clinic from now on.

The other reviews about being over charged are true. Just went in for an annual exam and shots because I moved to Bulverde from Alamo Heights and it was almost $100 more than my Alamo heights vet. I don't mind paying more for shots and such for a good vet, but almost $300 is just ridiculous. They took my dog back for shots and blood work and I hear him screaming and crying in the back. He's a sweet 80 lb lab mix. I've never heard my dog do that at the vet, he's never apprehensive and he loves everyone he meets.
When Dr. Kothmann came in the room, he basically insulted me 3 different times telling me my dog is spoiled (but really, who's dog isn't spoiled?) and I literally had to interrupt him from insulting me to ask him how the exam went. He said oh he's fine. Find another vet, one with a little compassion. 2 stars because the techs were nice.

BAH is amazing. They actually care. They talk to you. They listen. We board our babies there when we go on our yearly trip. This year one wasn't doing well after we had left. Kimberly took him home for one night, then he went to Dr. Kothmann's home where Theressa looked after him. Sadly, he passed, but he was not in a kennel when it happened. He. was looked after by the best. Theresa even arranged for his cremation which Heavenly Paws handled with our exact wishes and return to me. I can never thank BAH enough for their dedication to our babies for many years now.

Dr Kothmann and his staff are fantastic. I have never had a vet call to check on my pets after caring for them. This shows what a wonderful caring vet Dr Kothmann is along with his entire staff. Recently my Boston had scratched his eye & Dr Kothmann realized it was serious enough to be sent to the vet optometrist. He was able to have him seen the. same day as an emergency pet.
Minor surgery was required & Dr Kothmann called to see how he was doing. I had trouble putting in eye drops& medication. They had me come to the office & showed me how to do drops & meds. My little guy was very stubborn. I am very grateful for the care my little man received. Anyone looking for a caring vet should go to BAH.

Better get a detailed estimate before you decide to have something done, even if it's a routine procedure. WOW, $150-$250 over the phone quote ended up being over $700 when it was time to get pick up our dog. The price difference includes annual shots and the other meds used during the procedure. WOW

I can't say enough great things. Dr. Kothmann is always very informative and doesn't do more tests than necessary. He always follows up with a call to make sure our animals are doing better. He gets right down to the animals level so they are not as afraid. I highly recommend Bulverde Animal Hospital.

The staff and doctor are wonderful. My little Yorkie got very sick overnight. It was Saturday and and I didn't have an appointment but they took us right in. Dr. Kothmann is very knowledgeable and personable. Took lots of time with us, answered all my questions, prescribed medication. The doctor called to check on my dog a couple of days after we were there. I highly recommend Bulverde Animal Hospital (cost is very good compared to other vets). Toni L.

This is the best Doctor and staff that I have dealt with. The Dr. Saved my chiwauwau and her 3 puppies The staff also played a very important role and due to their excellent training and quick action Carmilla and her triplets are all doing extremely well. I can recommend this hospital with its excellent Dr. And staff. I have 4 rescues and will take them to this clinic and hospital. Thank you Bulverde animal hospital for saving my kids.l

This vet should voluntarily surrender his license or retire before The State of Texas revokes his license. There is absolutely no follow up after a visit. Kothmann's problem is his diagnosis is based on what expensive medicine he can sell you. When he finds out you will buy the medications elsewhere at a much better price he seems to lose interest, get rude and surly and disappear into another room. Don't go to Kothmann and if you have to don't give him one dime for anything you can buy everything much cheaper elsewhere.
He has to write you a prescription, he cannot force you to be robbed by his prices. Why pay $7.00 for a pill you can buy for $2.30? They should make it illegal for any vet to dispense medicines and other products. His memory seems to be slipping as during my last visit he made many false comments and statements about prior treatments. Not only was that unprofessional, but plain disgusting. There are better competent vets in the area. Bedside manners are non existent, but let's leave that out and focus on main complaint.

I recently left my vet to get one closer to me. I chose to try BAH due to a referral and a situation a few months ago with the boarding of my dog and they stayed late to help get him taken care of to go to the pet hotel. So I took Mr Beans In on Saturday for his annual checkup and shots. From the time I walked in to the time I left they took care in making sure my timid little man was comfortable.
But today they called me with his lab results that were great and emailed them to me as well. I began to look them over and saw something that said HIGH. Concerned I started looking online for information. I then called them to see if they could explain it and if I needed to do something for him. After a brief hold, I expected to get a vet tech but instead it was Dr. Kothmann!
He took the time to explain it to me and assured me Mr Beans was healthy and fine. This was everything to me! He is busy and he made the time to make a furry guardian comfortable. I couldn't ask for a better vet or staff! I'm so happy I made this decision.

I apologize because my rating has nothing to do with the staff, as they are all friendly but this place is way overprice. As you can see on the site there are no Prices listed for anything. That's because when you go in they start adding everything up and bring you the cost on a printed copy. You have to tell them what you do and don't want. One Example: $65.00 for a microchip. Don't waste your time, Vetco Does microchipping for $15.00.

Dr. Bunting and Dr. Kothmann have been taking care of all my babies since 2012 and I absolutely love them! They always ensure that my kiddos are well taken care of and the staff does a great job with them as well! Kudos to the Bulverde Animal Hospital team! You guys are awesome. Thank you so much for taking care of my fur babies and treating me and my family incredibly. Impeccable customer service!

Terrible experience. I took my acutely ill German shepherd for what they call a "drop off" visit. When I dropped her off I did not have the opportunity to meet the vet to express my concerns and fill her in on my dog's history, diet, usual activities environment etc. They called me to picked her up 4 hours later said "There doesn't seem to be anything wrong." When I asked to talk to the vet they said that wasn't how a drop off visit worked.
I said I had never been to a veterinarian who wouldn't discuss a case with the client, but if that's how they operated I would just pay and take my dog and go. NOw the front desk people got excitable, wouldn't let me have my dog until I talked to the vet. She came out and railed at me for abusing her staff for awhile and then someone else finally dragged my (still sick as hell) dog out. Tomorrow I have to find another vet who cares. This one doesn't

I waited 4 weeks to write this to be be fair. They completely botched my dogs' euthanasia. My regular Vet was closed that day, and I won't go into the reasons why we had to euthanize, only to say we didn't want her going through 2 more days of pain. Upon entering an exam room, they took my dog to the back room to place a catheter. When they came back, bandages around her leg were very bloody.
I should have left with my dog right then. Anyway, we didn't. When he injected her, the cathetet wasn't in a vein. My poor dog screamed in pain and fear, as the poison burned into her surrounding tissue. The vet scrambled to remove her back to the back room, where the catheter was properly inserted. When he returned 5 excruciating minutes later, my dog was unconscious.
Other than breathing, she had passed. He gave her another injection to terminate. This was far from euthanasia, the last moments of our poor dog's life was filled with pain and fear. I am absolutely NOT exaggerating the incident. In fact, I'm being kind. That's why I waited a month to write this. I asked the Dr why use a catheter, as we have put animals asleep before, and always they have been directly injected.
His reply was "it's more professional". This terrible episode was far from professional. It was terrifying. My wife and myself had to witness our much loved pet go through such a terrible death. She cried until she went unconscious. This was not a peaceful death. The Dr kept calling her "him" as well. I really feel he did not care about our dog, or us. Stay away from this place.

I've never had anything but great service from this vet. I take my dog and 3 cats there. They were open late and took great care of my oldest cat during an emergency. I always feel like they take their time with my pets and do a thorough evaluation every time. They always take the time to answer questions that I may have about process, procedures, or anything to do with my pets.

I have used this vet twice. First time I thought maybe I was harshly judging the experience because I had to put a stray cat to sleep. The second time was same treatment though. No "bedside" manners at all! The Dr.'s need a lesson in customer service. The Dr.'s were rude and almost condescending both times. The other staff members were polite and seemed to genuinely care, they don't deserve the poor rating.
I said after the first time I wouldn't go back but had an emergency with an outside kitten and they were the only place open after I got home from work so I had no choice. I regret going back and I am certain I will NEVER return. I will drive an hour away to go anywhere else but here.

Our poodle had kidney failure and had to be hospitalized here for a week. He was in good hands. Dr. Kothmann called us daily with reports and visited with me in person to answer my questions and explain tests each morning. He never rushed and took his time during our visits. Dr. Kothmann also patiently took time to go over options, costs, and details.
His staff even trained us to administer IVs at home, which we did like pros. They also showed us how to prepare our dog's special food. As usual, when we took over the dog's medical care at home, the doctor called to check up on our and our dog's progress, which improved for 2 weeks. Unfortunately, our pup was too sick to survive much longer.
They were supportive and took care of his body's arrangements. Again, not rushing us into decisions and reassuring us of our decisions. The staff is nice and they truly care for animals. You can tell that nurses have found their calling in animal care. We've also boarded our dogs there over the years. They took care of exams, shots and bathing while we were away so we didn't have to worry about running to get the additional shots needed when boarding at other places.
It was about $30/day a year ago, plus the cost of the exam and shots (when needed). The building may not be fancy and new, but I'd go for old school country care any day. Care was excellent, staff was pleasant and professional, and costs were way more reasonable than other facilities. We'll be investing in pet insurance next time.

Watch out or you'll be over charged. Upon taking my dog to see Dr. Kothmann. I was amazed at his astronomical.fees. Really $57.54 for a heart worm test. After briefly checking my dog he came back with an estimated amount of $520.00 to run test on the dog, in order to find out what was wrong with her. When questioning him about the fees he told me his clients know how much he charges.
I told him I think I'll get a second option and took my dog down the road to only pay $245.60 for the same test and it included the meds. Go figure! I wouldn't even give one star but had to in order to post it.
