We started creating these cardboard pet cutouts of our favorite dog and cat patients to display around our facility. We have a couple of these displayed around the office to warm the hearts of our staff.

***update based shelters response: I was willing to adopt the cat with the issues. I was told not only could i NOT adopt him I could not touch him without gloves until his culture test was clear. They said they were unwilling to adopt him out because of the increased chance of reinfection. A clear culture was a pre requisite for adoption with no other option.
Very cruel. I purchased a lot of items in preparation for bringing him with me. I was not seeking nor needed a hold. If I knew my options, I would have adopted him a long time ago I was kind of surprised that this shelter had such low reviews realtive to its level of cleanliness. It is super clean and the cats are generally able to roam free. IMO, on first impression, it should be an easy 5 star. Now, I understand why it is not 5 star.
I had visited the shelter to see an orange tabby. The cat had a sign on its cage stating it would have to stay on site until it cleared wringworm and that it could not leave until cleared. I live realitively close so visited the cat about 3x. I emailed Payton expressing interest. Never got a response. Told a male that worked there that I was interested.
He assured me he would relay the message to Payton. I visited the can on Friday and came back today 5/1/22 to inquire about paying the adoption fee, as the cat healed. On May 1st. I learned the cat was adopted. Cruel, evil women. They obviously don't want to adopt to me so it is an easy decision to never return. Before this happened, I couldn't fathom why this shelter was less than 5 stars. Now I am shocked they have any stars.

First time adopting from Heartland and it was the best possible experience. From filling out the adoption request to visiting the dog at the place in person. I wanna thank Carrie for everything. She was professional and very helpful answering any questions we had. We adopted a chihuahua and she now has the best possible forever home. I highly recommend this shelter to anyone in need of a new pet. Thanks again!

I am deeply sadden to discover Heartland Animal Shelter is now placing tatoo's on the animals that are spayed as a symbol that animal no longer has reproductive organs. :( I guess documentation and communication are now a thing of the past. We recently adopted our 2nd pup from Heartland (our first was 10 yrs ago) and was never told about this action.
It was only after we got her home that we noticed a bright bluegreen mark on her lower abdomen. I called to inquire and that's when I heard about Heartland's newest policy. The lady who I dealt with for the adoption stated "everyone is doing this" in which I replied that is not true as we adopted another pup a yr earlier from another adoption agency and they did not imbed their mark (tattoo) on our now dog. Heartland needs to be reminded these are not their dogs and cats.
They are an adoption agency finding these furry friends their forever home. Funny though. their clinician vet could not give the right puppy vaccinations in the correct duration so we had to redo all the vaccinations, they also could not register the rabies vaccination with the county well that cost a few dollars more, but they can pick up an ink gun and leave their mark.
For those reading this review I'm sharing this experience so you can speak up that placing a tattoo on an animal is wrong for domestics animals especially that you do not own. Ranchers and farmers brand their herds for many reasons. Domesticated dogs and cats do not needed to be branded. Yes the skin is damaged but the hair will grow back but that's not the point. Tattoo your own bodies and leave the animals alone.
Go back to school to learn what really matters, the vaccinations. Be a good community member and register the Rabie shots your giving. If you find a dog/cat on Heartlands site, adopt, the process is straight forward and better to give the pet you fell in love with a home rather than leave it in a shelter. For Heartland, stop putting your mark on the animals and communicate.

When I first moved out on my own I looked at Heartland for a cat. While that fell through due to my living situation I always thought of them due to my friendly, kind, and professional experience with them. My now husband and I went back to Heartland a few years later to adopt a dog and had just as positive of an experience with them the second time around.
It's been nearly 2 years now since we adopted our rott mix Riley from Heartland and she's been the perfect fit. We had gone in to meet another dog but he was unavailable by the time we could get out there as we did not live nearby. The young woman helping us that day asked if we'd be interested in seeing two other dogs with similar dispositions to the one we came for and it clicked with Riley.
We can't bring in anymore fur babies at this time but we have always planned on going back when we are able to look for another pup that needs a home! Thank you Heartland for bringing our furbaby to us!

I adopted my cat Lily from Heartland in 2016 and the entire adoption process was seamless! I continue to be impressed with how the shelter is run and all the outreach and fundraising activities they host. Even though I live in the city and can't physically make the drive out to Northbrook that often, I still feel like I'm contributing to the shelter through activities like Bachelor/Bachelorette brackets, virtual bingo and trivia (perfect during these shelter in place times), digital pet paintings, etc. Please continue to keep up your fun and innovative fundraising activities for those of us who want to help the animals from afar!
