Call
Walk-ins are welcome, but we do have capacity limitations in our cat-house and dog-wings, therefore we recommend making a reservation to ensure the best experience! Volunteers Needed: Orphans is currently looking for volunteers who are true cat lovers and who are interested in working hands on with the cats at the Gurnee store. These volunteers will be responsible for assisting with daily feeding, caring, cleaning and introducing the cats to potential adopters.

If you are a cat lover and interested in becoming involved with Orphans and our new cat adoption center, contact the shelter directly at 847-945-0235 or email us at volunteer@orphansofthestorm.org.
Services
To take responsibility for each and every orphaned, abandoned, abused or neglected dog and cat which reaches our doors; to take them in and shelter them; to provide the best medical and physical care possible for them; to nurture them back to health if need be; and finally to place them into warm, loving, adoptive homes where they can enjoy the lives they deserve.
We invite you to come to the shelter and find a dog or a cat that will become your lifelong friend and companion. Before you come to visit there are a few things you should make sure to bring along. We are proud to introduce our cat adoption program, Friends for Seniors. This adoption program is designed to help senior adults afford the initial costs to take on an adult dog or cat as a pet.
Join our growing network of foster families in our effort to provide individualized care to dogs and cats that need extra support. If you have love, time, and patience to give, we have many residents that would benefit greatly from time outside the shelter. In a shelter setting, some animals struggle more than others.
Donating to Orphans of the Storm supports our life-saving mission, and at the same time truly makes a difference for an animal in need. Each donation is as individual as the person giving it. Neighborhood children hand-deliver a ziplock bag of change collected from a lemonade stand. Leftover medications from a pet that has recently passed are lovingly presented while memories are shared. A handwritten note accompanies a very generous check inside a holiday card. These are but a few of the ways that donations arrive.

This was Dragon Night, now she goes by the name Sonja. She was very skittish at first and took sometime but she is slowly getting used to her new home. She is such a cutie all she wants is cuddles and endless head scratches! Everyone here are super nice and sweet. They gave her some treats and brushes when adopting. Over all the staff where really helpful. Just know that if you decide you want to adopt be sure to bring your own crate, otherwise they will let you purchase a box that you will able to take your new friend home!

We adopted a dog from this shelter who ended up having a hind leg injury that was played off by the staff as paw discomfort due to the cement/woodchips they walk on. This was proven false by the vet, which is sad as the dog was in the shelter's care for 5 weeks and who knows when or how this injury happened. We think the pain of this injury and being in a home and playing with our other dog irritated the injury which then caused the new pup to be aggressive with our other dog.

We would have never brought home an injured dog had we known the full circumstances. When dropping him off, I also fear they did not listen to our feedback and likely will not disclose this dog's full history (medical & behavioral) to the prospectove owners. I hope the best for him, but really would not recommend this shelter for many reasons. Our first rescue came from a shelter that has all their animals in foster care.

This is the best way to go as there are more people looking out for the animals and the foster can give better insight into how the dog really is in a home environment, plus be able to spot any injuries.

A few months ago our family came in looking for a dog that could handle and love our 2 year old. The staff directed us to the storefront in the mall and told us all about Cuddle Bug. We went in and fell in love! The transition home and getting him comfortable was a challenge at first, but he has grown comfortable and confident in his new home. His new name is Baxter, after the town he came from, and he is best friends with our son.

They are INSEPARABLE! I just wanted to share an update and let you know that he is happy, safe, and LOVED sooo much. Thank you for all of your help. This is our second adoption from your shelter and our second success story. We love this shelter and we will continue to come here for our animals. You are honest, caring, and affordable. It's clear you care about the animals and not the profit. Thank you for all that you do for the animals in your care!

We adopted a dog from you guys about 6 years ago his name was Kevin we named him clyde he came with lyme disease we never saw a issue from it. He turned out to be exactly what our family needed. Unfortunately last weekend we suddenly had to put him down due to a disk rupturing in his back vertically into his spinal cord and paralyzing him instantly.

We will be back to find another one when we're ready but I couldn't imagine another rescue being as wonderful as orphans was. Thank you for guiding my family to clyde years ago he was truly our best friend and helped our family more than I could ever explain.

A wonderful place to rescue a dog or cat. These animals desperately want their freedom. I have adopted four dogs from Orphans and they are all amazing!

Great experience. Staff was amazing, at getting patrons in the door and helping them meet the orphans, in need of good owners. All were very knowledgeable of orphans and showed much care and love towards them.

I saw a beautiful Tuxedo kitten named Guacamole on the website that has just came in and I quickly made the first appointment available for the next day because I knew there would be a lot of interest in him. They open at 12 PM and the first appointment was at 12:30 PM. My beautiful Tuxedo cat hat recently passed away and this particular kitten looked so much like him and I really had my heart set on him.

I arrived a few minutes early to see Guacamole sitting on the shoulder I have a woman at the desk who had just adopted him! My heart sank. They told me that they have walk-ins and that she was there at 12:00 when they opened! What is the purpose of having an appointment and having to fill out information before you can even I get an appointment if anyone can just walk in and look at the cat that you have an appointment for especially since my appointment was at 12:30 PM! They should've told her that someone had an appointment to look at guacamole at 12:30 PM and that if we did not take him that she could look at him. That was so wrong!

I loved this shelter because they really do care about their animals finding a home. They dont rush you and will tell you information about their pets. I adopted my girl Julie from this shelter. They were very informative and explained the behavior of my cat when I mentioned I wanted to adopt her. They didnt just hand her over but made sure I knew my cat's personality beforehand.

This feline girl was described as spicy and needing special care and patience. It's been over a month and Julie has become a sweet and loving cat who loves to follow me around the house asking for pets. She also loves to sit on my lap while I watch TV. Thank you for helping me find my feline companion!

I have been waiting for a calico kitten my entire life. I filled out an application to adopt Twiglet as soon as I saw her picture on the website and read her stats. I went to visit her the next day. When she had arrived at Orphans of the Storm the day prior, she had been rejected from her first home because she had "terrorized the other cat." Miss California Twiglet Calico Cat, or Cali for short, is now safe and sound with experienced cat owners, an older cat brother, and an older human sister. 5/5 stars.
