Harbor Humane Society is a 501(c)(3) non-profit animal shelter located in West Olive, MI. Founded in 1956 as Ottawa Shores Humane Society, we have been serving our west Michigan community and beyond for over 50 years and we hold the municipal contract for Ottawa County. On average, over 3,500 animals enter our facility each year as strays, animals transferred in, and owner surrenders.
Our adoption process follows a walk-in first-come, first-served policy with a completed and approved adoption survey. We will not hold animals unless there are additional meet and greet meetings required (dog-to-dog, child meeting). If you have questions regarding our processes or your adoption survey, please email Office@harborhumane.org!
Do you struggle with pests on your property? Harbor Humane Society offers working cats to businesses or homes in need of pest control. These cats come free of charge to qualifying adopters. Qualifying working cats are typically brought to HHS as stray cats, but are not social enough for indoor placement.
If you have found a stray cat or dog, there are a number of things you can do to help get the lost pet home and keep both you and the animal safe. Please be sure to approach all animals with care. A strange, frightened, and possibly sick or injured animal can behave unpredictably. Move slowly, and remain in your car or at a safe distance if you feel unsafe (in this case, calling your local Police or Animal Control is the best option).

These folks are trying to get pets into the homes of loving pet parents. If you have room in your home and heart stop and take a look. There are so many that need homes. My only suggestion is that with any new pet, especially a shelter pet have your vet check it out as soon as you can. This will help you get off to a good start. We picked up Toby a 4 yo cat this past weekend and are pleased as punch to have him in our home!

I love harbor humane. They have a great community of people who love animals. They hold successful fundraisers and all of the employees sincerely love the animals. Attached are pictures of my amazing couch potato I adopted from them. He was my foster fail, and Harbor Humane did everything to take such good care or him and improve his quality of life. If you are looking for another family member, Harbor Humane is the place to go!

My boyfriend and I visited today just to check it out, and we met the sweetest cat ever. I can't remember her name but if you met her you'd know. She recently had gotten tummy surgery yet she was still so calm and cuddly. I wish we could've adopted her but I know she will find a perfect home. My two cats are from Harbor human society and the adoption went very smooth.
I couldn't be happier with my babies. If you are thinking of adopting eventually, I definitely suggest this place. The staff are very helpful and the animals are all treated with so much kindness. I love visiting.

Hello, Don't know who will read this but in the year 2020 and 2021 I adopted 2 cats from harbor humane almost a year apart. The first cat is named Pacha (first picture), he's 3 and the light of my life. However when we adopted him he had a serious wound under his arm that was extremely infected. However that is not what was told to me. It was poorly stitched closed and I was told all I had to do was get the stitches taken out in a week and it would close up on its own.
However that was not true. So when I took him to the vet a few days later they let me know the wound was infected and needed serious care that even surgery would probably not fix. It took 3 months of daily water therapy, weekly vet visits and almost $800 to fix. And when I contacted Harbor Humane to tell them of his condition and ask why they didn't tell me, they said they never lied to me and I just didn't understand them.
He is now a happy and healthy kitty but it was just short of a miracle he survived after they neglected, how infected it was and gave him multiple useless surgeries. However my second cat wasn't so lucky. I adopted Hummus (second picture) in October of 2021. He was the sweetest cat I have ever met. He had a bit of a cough when I got him but I thought it was nothing I couldn't help fix.
When I took him to the vet it turned out he was behind on shots and hadn't been tested for many diseases such as Feline lukemia and intestinal parasites. And of course he had Giardia which is a common parasite in shelter cats. I worked to help cure him but he just seemed to get weaker. Eventually one night he became unresponsive and I took him to the emergency vet where I was told that he had FIP.
A incurable disease that makes your body fill with fluid and your blood stop flowing. His body temperature was low and he was in a ton of pain. And this disease spreads like covid does. And he was in a crate with 4 other cats who probably contracted it. At only 5 months old I had to put him down and it was heartbreaking. And when I notified the shelter they never emailed me back.
I'm not saying don't support Harbor Humane as I do believe they are over worked and underfunded. But please be careful when adopting there, as many of their animals have not been properly cared for. I know I will not be adopting here again. RIP Hummus

When I was younger I promised myself that when I lost a dog I'd go out almost immediately and adopt another that needed a home. My feeling was that my loss didn't negate the fact that so many dogs are sitting in shelters waiting for a home that we could provide for them. Keeping my word proved to be much harder after I lost my Jasper in January.
But I still kept going on Petfinder to see who else was out there. Towards the end of the week after losing my sweet boy to cancer, a super cute little blue heeler mix popped up. I ran downstairs with my phone and told my husband we HAD to have her. We headed to Holland the next day and got in line before they opened, there were two couples ahead of me and my heart sank when I opened my phone and saw an email stating that there was a ton of interest in this dog.
One of the people in front of me was indeed there to try and adopt her, and then another couple showed up with a pre-approved application, I wanted to give up and leave but something told me to hang tight. The woman in front of me had to go to work so she couldn't stay to adopt, and the pre-approved couple decided not to take her. After that she was ours!
When we brought home our Gracie Rex (formerly Sicily) back in January. I was told she was heart-worm positive, so we'd have to bring her back to get treatments, which we just did recently, the shelter covers half the cost. Well of course while she was getting treated I just had to go "visit" the other dogs up for adoption in the back. One of them, Hart, now Dakota, somehow ended up at home with us, weird.
I have noooo idea how that happened.;) I told my husband he's lucky we live within city limits where we're only able to have 3 dogs. I'm not quite sure how he's going to handle me if we move to a township that doesn't have limits. The shelter is clean, staff is friendly but a bit overwhelmed, expect to have a wait, I'd say the adoption process for us both times was 2-3 hours, I hear it goes quicker if you have a pre-approved adoption application, the lobby area gets very crowded so keep that in mind if COVID or claustrophobic.
Many dogs are in foster care so you may need to call to get a meet time set up. You can call but it's hard to get a hold of somebody, I recommend emailing them with any questions and patiently waiting for a response.

I had an absolutely amazing experience at harbor humane society. The staff was so kind and extremely helpful. They all obviously care very much about animals and finding the right place for them. I looked at several different shelters for several months when considering adopting a dog and they were above and beyond the best. I adopted from them about a year ago and I have recommended it to every person I know considering pet adoption ever since.

Amazing place with wonderful animals and volunteers but most of the staff are rude and are obviously just there for the check, but some are very sweet and thankful to us volunteers, others give us dirty looks, snotty comments, and act like we are bad people. I just feel like they should hire people who actually care about the animals and their wellbeing and those who are there "only for there checks" -a staff member at hhs should find a job he actually cares about that's not affecting lives of super sweet animals!
