Services
We all love what we do at Cabrillo. We love animals and we are advocates for animal health and wellbeing. Because of our passion for first-class animal care, we have devoted our time energy and money into building the finest veterinary facility in San Diego. Our dedicated team is committed to caring for your pets with precision equipment, technologies, and medical services beyond conventional requirements.
Our exceptional kennel boarding facilities provide your pet with loving supervision, exercise, and socialization while you're away. We understand that when you are away you want the best care for your pet, including exercise, nutrition and personal attention. We are meticulous about their medicines, their food sensitivities, and their play habits.
We provide a superior pet store with hand-picked products that we feel are great for most cats and dogs. We're not a large chain of stores that puts thousands of products on the shelves, some of which may be bad for your pet. Our team can understand your pets' needs and recommend the type of product that should be best for them.
It's not common to find a team that has been together for as long as we have. We feel like we're a family at work and we feel like we're a family with you. We have been happily serving Point loma and Ocean beach community since 1975 for over 45 years. Come meet our team in person. Dr. Gary Rose graduated from Michigan State University in 1973.

Wow. This place was amazing. I truly appreciate the staff and how they accommodated my Cane Corso there. They make you feel comfortable and are incredibly professional. I would highly recommend this place. I live on Coronado and I have multiple places on the island to go to but I chose off the advice of a PAWS staff member to go to Cabrillo and I am glad I did.
Thank you to the Cabrillo staff you can tell you love what you do and It's refreshing to feel that from start to end with my appointment. My Corso Wiggles appreciates it!

I would give Cabrillo ten stars if I could. Without getting into a paragraph of details, my established vet would not see my dog on short notice when she needed a chest x-ray and diuretic. Cabrillo listened to me, took time to assess the situation, and saved my dog from an urgent care visit and saved her life. Their intervention was essential and I can't thank the staff enough. The staff is kind, compassionate, and LISTENS to you when you speak. Dr. Johnson was exceptional and I recommend her with enthusiasm! Thank you again!

When I brought my new adopted dog to Cabrillo I knew only one of the vets there: Dr. Camarrotta who had been at another local veterinary hospital. He is thorough, careful, and kind. He communicates really well and spells out options in a way that helps guide decision making. He is honest about what is going on. I have since seen Dr. Lefkowitz as well and she is also amazing with a great approach to the animals and to people.
The front desk staff is always, without fail, kind, helpful, knowledgeable, and efficient despite the pressures that have only gone up since the pandemic years. Finally, the entire space is set up to be clean, modern, efficient without being cold and clinical. The pet boarding and store downstairs are convenient even though I've only ever used the store once.
The prices for OTC meds and certain treats seem to be on par with what you'd find elsewhere. When I first started going, it was in the middle of the pandemic and I appreciated the precautions used by the doctors and staff. I especially appreciated that they set it up so we could meet in a separate room, masked instead of waiting outside in the parking lot. Now, of course, it is more or less back to normal although I still wear a mask inside all closed places.

First visit - brought our cat in for a wellness check. The vet tech and vet were so friendly, kind and patient. Had a very great experience with them. They recommended vaccines for our cat since they called a previous vet and got mixed info. I know our cat got those vaccines at some point so I wanted to double check her records at home before administering something she might not need.
They were understanding and I didn't feel pressured at all. The facility is nice, new looking and clean. There was a super strong bad dog smell in the back hallway but I think it was emitting from a dog and not the actual lack of cleanliness of the facility. When I originally found this facility on Yelp I saw they advertised a free frisbee or cat nip toy.
It had nothing to do with my choosing to book an appointment here (it was actually because they had the soonest availability compared to other nearby places) but I thought it was cool and totally forgot about it until I went to check in while I was there during the appointment and the offer popped up on my screen. I asked the receptionist about it when I was going to pay and she said they no longer give those.
While it's not a big deal at all and a cat nip toy is only a couple bucks - i thought it would be a nice treat for my cat after the appointment since she had a blood draw and most pets hate the vet. (Like when a kid has a scary dentist appointment and are treated afterward to "ease" the pain). Anyways, it's not a big deal that they don't offer the free frisbee or cat nip toy anymore.
I just think they should remove the advertising of it so it's not expected. Regardless, the vet and tech were very nice, easy to talk to and informative. I would come back here

You know, I have been going to This vet for over 4 years. I can't say I have ever had a "bad" experience, but I have never had a good one either if that makes sense. It has always been just so-so. Most of the time just dealt with various technicians and maybe a minute or two with the actual vet. To be honest I couldn't even give you a name of anyone. For the amount of money i pay for care, have decided to try a different facility.

Don't get me wrong, as a vet they are fantastic! But I'm not a huge fan of their overnight boarding.$170+ for two nights is insane. They nickle and dime for everything that should be included. I have to pay extra to let my dog play? I can't even get my pup on Sunday without paying more and they don't even get to play on Sunday at all! I would chose another boarding facility that offers more comfort for your pet for your money

I have been going here for years, following Dr Camarata here. He is the most compassionate and trustworthy Veterinarian I've known. The whole staff is great, from the front office to the techs. They saved the day again with a cat emergency. I had the pleasure of meeting Dr Leftkowitz and Bilal, a vet tech over the weekend while the took great care of my sweet girl.
We had to do a follow up procedure Monday to complete and Dr Camarata successfully took care of everything! The professionalism and empathy of all the staff is top notch. My only regret is not writing a review before now. Dr Camarata has been taking the best care of my cats for over 17 years.

They weren't my regular vets. I went because my dog (aka love of my life) was sick and my vet couldn't get him in for over a week. A good friend recommended Cabrillo so I called and got an appnt for the same day. We saw Dr. Lefkowitz. She was so kind and gentle and patient. She had to deliver some very bad news.cancer. She did it with compassion and explained my options, including seeing an oncologist.
She called the next morning and advised me that he had pancreatitis too and prescribed meds which I later picked up. Well 3 1/2 weeks and one disappointing oncologist appnt later and our boy told us by his look that he was ready. I took him back to Cabrillo because he had only been there once and going to his regular vet always made him anxious. The room they put us in was cheery and comfortable.
Of course we weren't feeling cheery but I did appreciate the environment they had made for pets and their family for this devastating stage (for the family) of pets too short lives. I was hoping to get Dr. Lefkowitz since I was so impressed with her bedside manner, but we got Dr. Rose instead. At first I thought he was a little cold. He didn't really introduce himself (to my recollection) or ask us our names.
But later his compassionate side came out and he spent time talking with us. I realized later that this part of his job is stressful for him too and a task he must endure but does not enjoy. So overall, my experience with Cabrillo was the best it could be for a very sad situation. I recommend them. They even sent a sympathy card which was a nice touch.
I was also impressed with the crematorium they used. We got our boys ashes back in a lovely pine box in a velvet bag. Also a paw print and some of his fur and literature on how to deal with the grief. His name was engraved on the box too. I will adopt more fur babies, my heart needs to lavish love on them and I think I will adopt Cabrillo as my vet clinic too. They're quite a bit further away from where I live but I think it will be worth the drive.
One thing that I think they could have done to improve my experience was to have gotten a follow up call regarding my dogs health a week or so after the initial visit. I know the vets are very busy but a phone call to check on him would have been greatly appreciated.

I'm not a patient of Cabrillo Pet Hospital but my pup was very sick and after calling multiple pet hospitals, CPH told me they could squeeze me in. I rushed her over and before they took my dog back, they showed me an estimate of how much everything would cost. I really appreciated this because I knew roughly what I would be paying for and it wasn't going to be a surprise at the end of the visit when you're usually hit with the bill.
While I sat in the waiting room, the vet came out 3 times to update me on what was going on. The whole place was clean and the staff was very friendly, making me feel very comfortable despite the stress of the situation. After much needed rest, my pup is back to normal and happy! Even though it wasn't a cheap visit I'm very happy with my experience with Cabrillo Pet Hospital!

I normally don't write good reviews, but today I brought my baby jaspier in to get his overgrown nails clipped and also has a nodule on his side. The front desk were very welcoming which made me feel more comfortable since it was my first time here. I was asked to take my baby back where he was weighed and then they took him from there. I was impressed how they kept me informed on what was taking place in the back where my baby was.
Both the tech and the doctor were very professional on what was needed to get my baby back to feeling where he should be. When they gave me the estimate of what jaspier needed to get him where he should be I was happily surprised that it was so reasonable! I will definitely be bringing him back for his next exams and whatever he needs. I hope this is some help for people that are looking for a quality place to bring their baby or babies!

Dr. Johnson and the rest of the staff are great. I brought my 12 year old dog (Chevy) in for tumor removal. Her tumors became so large that they started to have ulcers. Being worried she was too old for surgery (I was told by previous vet she had a 50/50 chance of survival) the staff put me at ease and said almost all patients make it. So I went ahead with the surgery and now she is like a new dog. At 12 she is running again and has energy she hasn't had in years. Very grateful for them helping extend my pups life.

Came here on the recommendation of 2 friends and was extremely disappointed and feel cheated! I brought my 13 year old cat for a routine annual exam, bloodwork, and urinalysis. Similar to most cats, he doesn't like going to vet and finds it stressful. This is really the only time he ever leaves the house. The tech immediately began commenting on his size as soon as she saw him (he is part maine coon) and seemed nervous handling him while weighing him.
She took him in back for the exam and lab collection, and after a few minutes came back to ask me if he was usually combative at the vet, and if he was up to date on rabies vaccines. (Rabies vaccine is not required for cats in CA.) I said no, because he is strictly indoors and not ever exposed to other animals so there is no risk, and that actually advice I have been by other vets in the past is to not vaccinate indoor senior cats because risks outweigh benefits.
She went back, and later the vet came in to say that my cat was being extremely combative and hard to control and he was not sure he could be able to collect lab samples. He said my cat was trying to bite. That if he bit, then he would have to be reported to the state and quarantined. He went back again, then returned after another few minutes to tell they would not be able to collect samples.
He said he was able to do a "quick exam" before "the cat lost patience" but that he seemed okay and healthy. I asked both the vet and the tech if I could help with the exam and be there to calm my cat, and they said no because of Covid it was standing too close. But they did not have a problem coming into the room with me and talking to me from less than 6 feet away, and we were all wearing masks.
When the tech brought my cat back, he was extremely upset. More upset than I have seen him at a vet's office before. I told both the tech and the vet that I have never had a vet's office tell me that they can't perform an exam or collect samples from my cat before, and they kept up the story that he was too combative and hard to control for them to proceed.
Then they charged me $76 for the "quick exam" and $56 for a fecal analysis. A total of $132. I wish I had argued about being charged for the "quick exam" since I have extreme doubts that this even took place, or that any sort of thorough health check worth that much money was done since the vet himself described it as a "quick exam". I suspect it was he himself who "lost patience" rather than my cat.
But at that point, I just wanted to get out of there and get home. On the drive home, my cat was still so upset that he got sick and threw up in his carrier, which he has never done before. I don't know what went on in that back room, but I definitely won't be back and I do not recommend this vet to others. I do have friends who say they have had great experiences here, but my experience did not match up to theirs.
I took him to another vet just yesterday and was able to witness the entire exam and lab collection, and this vet was very gentle with him, and he was not "combative" at all during the exam. He did of course have to be restrained for the lab collection, but this was done fairly easily by grabbing him by the scruff of his neck and laying him on his side.
He was not happy about it, obviously, but when it was done he just darted away a few feet. He only attempted to bite once or twice, and was easily deterred. So I'm certain the problem was not my cat, and was in fact the vet and this office.

Since we moved to Point Loma 10 years ago, we have taken our pets to Cabrillo Pet Hospital for vet services. We have always had amazing service and care from all the staff. Dr. Johnson has been our primary and she is wonderful. I particularly like that I can send her an email and she will respond in a reasonable amount of time. She truly cares about her patients and clients.
Another great thing about Cabrillo is that they have a store with supplies, offer doggie day care and pet boarding. We have used all these services and have been very pleased with the care and attention of the staff to our pets. We are very thankful to have Cabrillo Pet Hospital in our neighborhood.

Thanks to this great animal hospital I will be able to travel with my pet out of the country. Such a smooth process with Alex. My pets are usually difficult but my dog did great even without a muzzle due to their calm environment. Doctor Rose, was Great with my grumpy dog and cat, the most calm/serene appointment I've ever had.

We've been going to Cabrillo Pet Hospital for almost 20 years, and love them! They've taken very good care of our dogs and cat, and they take the time to answer our questions. Our last visit was an emergency because our dog's nail had been partially torn off. We're very grateful that Dr. Rose took her in for the emergency, took great care of her, and sent her home with instructions.
Our dog doesn't like going to the vet at all, and they also handled that well! Penny healed well, just like they thought she probably would. We've never been disappointed here.

I regret not posting this sooner. Honestly, these folks go above and beyond for every pet and owner. TL;DR this is the vet for you. I was released from the hospital on June 9th at 10am and they accidentally hit my service dog when they discharged me in a wheelchair. My service dog is 15 with age related breathing issues and arthritis. A broken rib would have been the end of her but a bruised one just needs pain relief.
My normal vet who I've spent upwards of $7000 with since October 2020 couldnt see her for over a week. So while I sat in the parking lot crying I asked for a copy of her records so I could try to find someone who could find 10 minutes to see her. I dont know if you've had a bruised or broken rib but they hurt like h**l and without her I cant be alone. Cabrillo somehow found a quick appointment for me by 2pm that same day, they prescribed pain relief and I was in and out in under a half hour.
Thank heavens for that because I started to go into a medical emergency just after I left and I was readmitted to the hospital. You know how they say you dont know how great things are until they are gone? Well the reverse is also true. After being told I needed to pay for a follow up check after a dental surgery resulting in the removal of over 20 teeth and a hole between a tooth and my brother's dog's sinuses, I would much rather pay Cabrillo for that check up because they go above and beyond to be there when you need them most. Isnt that what we all really need anyway?

Just a horrible experience. My dog has been sick for weeks. Can't get in for an appointment. When I do they put the dog on some medicines which didn't work. When I called to let them know it didn't work, they said I couldn't get an appointment for more than a week. I brought my dog to the ER and she has an 8 tumor in her spleen.
I called again to see if they could see her and figure out how to have the surgery and they told me to call around and see if someone else could do it. I'll never be back and highly recommend going elsewhere.

Don't bother. Called to get dog into see the doc as he's got what appears to be an infection / oozing wound on his neck/jaw. BTW - they've seen this dog since he was a pup and we recently took him to another vet due to appointment availability for when the swelling popped up. So we are decade old clients across our pets at Cabrillo yet they seemed insulted our dog went someplace else. Ugh.
Dog had initial check on the spot 1.5 months ago at different vet office due to appointment availability and they did pathology report (aspiration of a lump) and all negative. On antibiotics as they suspected it was a thorn etc. buried in his skin. Today dog is oozing at the spot (which is also swollen) and needs to be seen and prescribed antibiotics to prevent infection as well as to have area reassessed. Cabrillo preferred we go to initial vet - didn't care to see him.
When they were advised that other vet is out for a medical emergency and not working for 3 weeks they said they couldn't possibly see him for 10+ days (maybe the 1st week of August). So if you care about your pet and are looking for a compassionate office, maybe keep looking. They could not have cared less. Good luck.

Live in the Wooded Area just down the street and have brought our 2 animals here for years, also purchase all their food in the store downstairs. Went in to make a routine purchase of flea medication this morning and the women at the front desk were sadly just objectively rude. Not sure what the deal was, everyone has bad days, but the interaction could not have been more unprofessional.
In addition, they would only sell me a month's worth of flea medication on account of the fact that our dog had not been in for an exam in the last year, yet failed to take in to account that COVID made in-person visits challenging to say the least. Seems if the health and wellness of the pet/patient is of upmost concern then it would be better policy to simply sell me the 6-months of flea medication during the height of flea season to ensure my dog is comfortable/protected then kindly request I schedule an exam visit, which I happily would have done.
At the end of the day there are too many other options for pet care in San Diego available, so we'll happily drive an extra 15 minutes and forego anymore poor experiences at Cabrillo.

At the end of the day there are too many other options for pet care in San Diego available, so we'll happily drive an extra 15 minutes and forego anymore poor experiences at Cabrillo.

Following the recommendation of a friend we went to Cabrillo Pet Hospital and will not be going to any other animal hospital or veterinary practice so long as we live in San Diego. Over the years we've tried several, both corporate and local, with no success at treating our "spicy" cats with minimal stress to both felines and their human parents.
We went from an initial introduction to making difficult decisions with Cabrillo Pet Hospital in a matter of hours due to our specific situation. I cannot understate the amount of compassion and patience we felt from each and every member of their team. They shared they treat each pet as their own and I truly felt that as we navigated our path. The needs of our feline were put ahead of any air of convenience in getting to the next. If you are struggling to find a place you are confident in taking your animals for care to, please strongly consider going to Cabrillo Pet Hospital.

I'm really impressed with how Cabrillo Pet Hospital has handled COVID. I've been able to get an appointment within a few days (my last vet could not see us for weeks!) and they have the call-from-car system down to a science. My dog is way less nervous because we don't spend unnecessary time waiting around other animals. The front desk staff is so friendly and are not rude or rushed, they go above and beyond to actually listen!
My dog struggles with dementia-like symptoms and the Doctors at Cabrillo have even coached me through med options over the phone during her bad episodes. I feel like a valued customer not like a number in line here.

I've used Cabrillo Pet Hospital as my main Vet for a couple of years now. They provide great services all in one place: hospital, boarding facility, pet supply/ food shop, and they used to have a grooming facility - hope they bring this back sometime in the future. I've always experienced great service and professionalism from all staff, vet tech's and doctors.
I recently had to put down my long time pitbull buddy Tank. it was very, very, very, hard/ devastating but the staff helped me through it and made the process less stressful. I truly appreciate them for that and for the follow up condolences. It showed me that they really do care about their pet patients and owners. For the reasons mentioned above, I will continue to use their services and I highly recommend Cabrillo Pet Hospital

Words cannot express everything that they did for us. ALEX was understanding, polite, knew her job very well and made sure that we got everything that we needed easily and very quick. If it was not for Cabrillo, My family would not be taking our 2 dogs with us to Japan. At every hurdle that we had to try to jump over Cabrillo and Alex were there to assist and get us over it and on to the next one.
If you need a vet that will treat you like family and bend over backwards to help you when you need it the most then Cabrillo is at the top of the list. We need more people like Alex in this world, she is AWESOME. So after you read this everyone, take your pets to Cabrillo and let them take care of all your pet. Why are you still reading this great review, get in your car and head over to Cabrillo and ask for Alex!

WARNING! Do not follow their recommendation! I'm sad to announce this place has become a challenging place to work with. After my visit and my recommendation of bringing in a new client with a coupon for a free exam. I found out that because of COVID and the company had been bought out by another so they are no longer honoring any coupons. That is just bad business.
More importantly, they promote the WORST brand of food. SEE ATTACHED CLASS ACTION SUIT AND FILE IF YOU HAVE FEED YOUR ANIMAL THIS FOOD! Dr. Rose seemed very knowledgeable and highly recommends HILLS PRESCRIPTION DOG FOOD. (Which is owned by NESTLE CO). Told me the are the oldest company around and do actual testing on dogs and are backed by the FDA.
Neither are true. Also told me he feeds his Labradors the same food. Really? The following proves they have kick backs from, at least this company. the next day I received a coupon, which they no longer can accept bc of COVID and being "bought out" by another company for 30% off our online store purchase. The brand "prescription" dog food that he recommends has killed THOUSANDS of dogs and no only does the FDA not back them they say it contains toxic ingredients that cause liver and kidney failure. I want to thank Dr. Ron Cammarata for his examination of Kaylee. I thought it was something to do with her nasal passages either an infection or an allergic reaction. He told me exactly what needed to be done. I was hesitant as she had a similar issue in the past and I was my first time in to see him. As the issue started to escalate rapidly it was good I listened to his opinion. He was 100% correct on the issue and what was the best course of action to be taken. Kaylee is now breathing normal again.
