As the area's premier no-kill shelter, the Humane Society of Sarasota County engages the hearts, hands, and minds of the community to help animals. We rely solely on contributions from individuals, organizations, and corporations. HSSC receives no federal funding, nor are we funded by any national humane organization. The Giving Challenge, presented by the Community Foundation of Sarasota County with giving strengthened by The Patterson Foundation, caused a fervor of generosity across the Suncoast.

Incorporated in 1952 as Sarasota's first nonprofit animal welfare organization, the Humane Society of Sarasota County (HSSC) has grown to be the area's premier no-kill shelter. A home is found for every adoptable pet in our care. We take tremendous pride in being the area's premier no-kill shelter, and with that comes the responsibility to lead by example.
The Animal Clinic of the Humane Society of Sarasota County provides the community with accessible, high-quality medical care for dogs and cats at affordable prices. As a non-profit provider, our goal is to prevent and alleviate suffering in pets whose caregivers would otherwise not be able to afford veterinary care.
When you adopt a shelter pet, you save two lives-the pet you adopt and the pet who takes the space your new pet just vacated. HSSC has been a no-kill facility since 2009, which means that no animal is ever euthanized to make space for another. Every animal in our facility is getting a second chance for a happy life.
Scroll through our real-time list of adorable adoptable cats to find your perfect companion. All cats are spayed/neutered*, microchipped, vaccinated, and ready for adoption. Please review Pet Adoptions page for prices and the process to adopt. A hold may be placed on the animals but they cannot be fully adopted until they are spayed/neutered. Please call ahead if you are interested in a specific animal.

Truly an amazing facility with staff and volunteers who have a heart for helping animals in need. The second I walked through the doors, I was impressed by the inviting, warm atmosphere and smiles that greeted me. Everyone was professional yet approachable, which I appreciated greatly. I was surprised at how clean the facility was. Not easy to do with animals everywhere I'm sure!
It's evident the staff and volunteers work very hard to keep this great place clean and running smoothly and efficiently. I have never seen an animal shelter this clean and happy before. It was quite refreshing and I knew I was at the right place! I didn't want to leave!

Completely upset with how my experience went overall. at first everything was great, staff was nice and very helpful. I was able to find a kitten the same day and bring her home - they assured me she was negative for all bugs/infections. 3 weeks later my cat began loosing hair all over face and was having terrible skin reactions. I took her to the vet to only find out my kitten has had ringworm and or mites along with potential fleas.
They stated she has had this way longer than the time i had her. and all my animals at home had no infections. it is extremely disappointing to know i paid for a healthy kitten only to find out my kitten has been in pain and suffering for a long time. she showed no physical signs until weds this week when she lost her hair on her face and eyes. hope they can start running the proper tests on these animals so they can get treatments like they are supposed to so another family doesnt experience such heart break. very upset about this. only reason for the 1 star is because their clinic is trying to help right the wrong and pay for the medicines but now my family and my dog all have to be treated at an additional expense

FOR OVER 30 YEARS I HAVE ADOPTED DOGS FROM PRIVATE OWNERS WHO KNEW THEIR DOGS SINCE BIRTH, USUALLY 8 TO 12 WEEKS. I HAVE ADOPTED TWO DOGS NOW FROM SARASOTA HUMANE SOCIETY AND FIND THEY HAVE THE LARGEST VARIETY OF DOGS ANYWHERE I'VE LOOKED. THEY CARE FOR THEM IN THEIR NEW, CLEAN FACILITY WITH EXPERTISE. EVEN THOUGH THERE MIGHT BE SURPRISES WHEN ADOPTING A RESCUE DOG, I'VE FOUND IT'S JUST AS REWARDING AN EXPERIENCE AS A PRIVATE PUPPY. I'M THANKFUL THEY HAVE THEIR FACILITY HERE IN SARASOTA AND I LOVE MY TWO DOGS.
