Services
The Greater Androscoggin Humane Society is a safe space for animals in need and a resource for community members and their animal companions. We believe in kind, compassionate and humane treatment for all animals. Every day, we strive to provide the best care and the needed services to help save and improve lives in our community and beyond.
Our first President was the Honorable Nelson M. Dingley, Jr., a former Governor of Maine, U.S. Congressman and founder of our local paper, the Lewiston Daily Journal (now known as the Sun Journal). The Society's original mission was to protect work horses and children from abuse. Volunteers carried on this mission until 1912 when they first decided to create a "home" for stray animals.
At GAHS, people matter! From our staff, to our board, from volunteers to donors to community residents- we cannot help animals without the people who care. Our staff are the backbone of the organization, contributing vast amounts of knowledge, experience and dedication to our mission and to making sure every animal receives the best we have to offer.
Some cats don't want to hang out on your lap and do best in a "working" environment, with a job to do, like catching mice! The GAHS working cat program finds adopters who are looking for natural rodent deterrents for enclosed properties such as barns, warehouses, breweries, churches, factories or other facilities.

The Lewiston humane society totally lied about the dog that I rescued. I was his 4th home. His name is Waldon a lab retriever american pit bull. I have another Dog that is a submissive and docile female cattle mix. They got along great outside. But the paperwork said he walked great on the leash which was a lie about that he had no aggressive behavior.
Or bite history. I learned the hard way too late. The Lewiston humane animal shelter lied about his personality and behavior. I actually love pitbull mixes. On Wednesday evening I was in my kitchen doing the dishes when I turned around and Waldon was a total different dog. He wouldn't let me leave the kitchen at all. Totally growled at me for no reason.
When I said no. He actually became more aggressive. So I just walked away to use the bathroom when he attack me from behind. He bruised my ribcage, bitten my left arm and my poor submissive tried to save me. Which I was more concerned about her safety than mine. I called and emailed the administration office in Lewiston animal shelter and showed the bruises that the dog left on my left arm.
I actually sprayed him with apple cider vinegar to get him off on me. When the staff called me the next day for I can return him. They said they will take him in at 1pm. I have several bone diseases and primary progressive MS. The behavioral trainer blamed me for triggering his own personality. Which doesn't make sense because I used to work with aggressive behavior dogs.
And he definitely has major issues. I also used to foster puppies/young adult pitbull mixes with my retired certified service dog who passed away a month ago from kidney failure. To be honest. There price range to adopt is cheap but they lie on the paperwork about the dogs behavior.

It's hard to leave this place without bringing all the animals home! GAHS is such a wonderful organization and the work they do is beyond measure when it comes to helping stray or unwanted animals. They also have a great program that helps people who may need food/litter/toys and anything else one might need but may not be able to get for whatever reason. The staff is extremely friendly and knowledgeable and will gladly help you navigate adoption, spay/neuter and shots or anything else you may need!

I appreciate what they do here and it has helped me a lot - though just a note. Surrendering animals is never easy but dealing with a rude receptionist really makes it that much harder. Lindsey (unsure of spelling) from the front desk was the most unpleasant person I've worked with and treated me like I was annoying her when after roughly 7+ minutes of silence I asked if she needed anything else from me. Really unprofessional and made the experience even more sad than it already was. 4 star only because they are a good resource as a whole

Great experience! The staff here we're super kind and compassionate, they clearly love what they do. They never made me or son (who was hopping around with excitement)feel like we were a burden (even though they were extremely busy). They seemed genuinely excited for us as we adopted our cat and provided us with some food and a list of vets. You made me and my son's adoption experience amazing. Thank you!
