Services
Each year, we care for 500-plus homeless animals at our shelter. The building has radiant heat for warm, dry floors and a high efficient ventilation system. While in our care, dogs enjoy outdoor exercise in our kennels and play yards, where they can dig and run through the woods. Their indoor kennels are roomy and well lit.
Gayle Mroczkowski is a former hospital and non profit administrator who has lived in Petoskey for 14 years. During that time, she and her late husband, Tom, adopted a total of five dogs and one cat from LTBHS. In addition to currently serving as Vice-President of the LTBHS Board of Directors, Gayle is Vice-President of the Friends of the Petoskey Public Library.
You need to contact Animal Control at 911. The officer will either pick up the animal or direct you to take it to the stray center, which is the Bay Area Pet Resort. It is important that all found animals are taken to this facility to aid in the return with their owner. It is also important that this is done immediately.
The dogs at Little Traverse Bay Humane Society are eagerly awaiting their chance to join your family. All of our dogs are spayed or neutered and vaccinated. If you are interested in adoption, please fill out our adoption application. A hard copy of the application can be found here. We will review your application and contact you when it has been approved. Our cats are looking forward to joining your family. All of our cats are spayed/neutered, vaccinated, and tested for Feline Leukemia.

After rescuing two cats from here, I loyally brought them in for shots and appointments. When one of them was about to die, I was met with "we're too busy to help you right now". Knowing that I was on my way to put my cat down. Then 20 more questions ensued about my cat and where I got it, and who saw her. as she is dying in my arms. Now I will never get another cat, or take any animal there again.

Absolutely an amazing facility! We were worried that our German Shepherd wouldn't be able to be boarded ever again, since our last boarder said that he was not welcome back after a first time 1 night stay. Little Traverse Bay Humane Society took him in with open arms & immediately knew how to deal with him & made our dog comfortable! They kept us informed with how he has been doing the whole time.
We signed up for the trainer sessions at Little Traverse Bay to work with him also while he stayed here. She has been amazing & so helpful for Ruger & for us to understand what works best with our German Shepherd, she brought tears of joy to us as we read her email update on how he was doing. We are so grateful that they gave our boy a chance! I could not recommend a better place to bring your animals and 100% know they are absolutely getting the best knowledgable care & love! We cannot thank them enough & are so blessed by all of the wonderful staff that take care of Ruger!

Think we got the only cat I liked. There were maybe 10 cats to pick from and only 1 cat had any showmanship and stood up to introduce himself. I'm low-allergic (pet dander in the eyes) so we bought an air purifier and it's only been 2 weeks since we've had the cat and he's adjusted really well. Obviously I'm a hand picked view but if we're talking the facility they are as professional as a pet shelter should be. If you live within the area and look for animals to friend I'd try here because of all the lasting features besides the shelter aspect.

This humane society is amazing. A while back when we tried to adopt a pet here, they wouldn't allow us to at the time because one of the animals we had on record wasn't up to date on shots. It just shows that they care and do not want the animals going to people who do not maintain them properly. We have dealt with them over the years. They will assist if they can with spay and neutering discounts.
They have plenty of resources to help ease the cost of certain pet needs. The staff is great from our experience. And they're very honest they're not out to just dump pets on anyone who's willing to take them.
