Animal City is a family owned business that has been serving Connecticut for over 70 years. Since conception in 1933, Animal City has been involved in the freshwater tropical fish trade. Over the years the business evolved into a full line pet store providing a vast variety of domestic and exotic pets, products, and knowledge.
Diabetes can be a challenging condition to manage, especially in pets that cannot verbally communicate how they feel. Recognizing the symptoms of diabetes in dogs can help pet owners manage their dog's disease more easily, avoiding severe complications that could become life-threatening. Diabetes - more formally known as Diabetes mellitus - is when a dog's body does not make enough insulin or has an abnormal reaction to insulin.

A wide variety of interesting and uncommon stock offered, but super expensive. Promised my son he could get an axolotl this weekend, and this store was one of the only local places that had them. 50 bucks for the standard brown wild type and 100 for the white leucistics. All of them were very small juveniles no bigger than a few inches. Other shops and local breeders usually carry full grown adults for the same amount or less. Of course, my kid wanted a white one, so I feel super ripped off.

This is a great place for reptiles and fish. They have a wide selection of tanks and stands. They do offer crickets and live feeder rats for bigger reptiles. The selection of snakes for sale towards the back of the store is very impressive. You can also purchase small rodents like guinea pigs and hamsters for pets. You can pet the bunnies too! They have also had chinchillas in the past.
They do not have a wide selection of dog or cat food if that is your fur baby, thats why I give a 4 star rating. The staff are very helpful and knowledgeable. They are always happy to assit you and answer any questions you have.

Bought a bunny from here 10 days ago. Came with no paperwork- don't know if she had shots, was neutered, even the gender. Bunny died within 10 days. They offered no compensation and stated that they have a "3 day guarantee", as if an animal dying within 3 days, or even 10 days is normal. Do not buy an animal from here.

The back room of this shop has animals in overcrowded plastic storage bins; rats, guinea pigs and rabbits, many of them extremely pregnant with no food or water. Guinea pigs and rabbits living right on top of each other, which is incredibly unsafe as rabbits carry the bacteria Bordetella bronchiseptica, which is the most common cause of respiratory illnesses in guinea pigs which are often very severe and fatal.
These animals in the backroom are a breeding factory for the cute little babies up front, and many of these animals are visibly sick, yet they are still charging $60 for a baby guinea pig. There were 4 baby bunnies stuffed into one tiny cage, and they all looked miserable. My friend's guinea pig that she bought from their back room was scared of everything and incredibly untrusting, and never wanted to be held. Any store that treats its animals like this should not be an operating business.

Lester the owner is awesome. Very smart and knowledgeable about fish, reptiles, etc. Great store and fun to look around. Amazing customer service and staff. They make sure you are satisfied! I trust what I purchase from here, everything is WELL taken care of. Definitely recommend. Very wide range of animals and other products that you will NOT find in a chain pet store. Always a pleasure visiting!

Starting a new tank for my daughter so we stopped in here to see what freshwater fish they had in stock. The young lady who helped me was so friendly and helpful. My daughter loved seeing all the fish, birds, rabbits and guinea pigs. They have a great assortment of freshwater fish, much more than your big box pet stores and the fish are much healthier. The tanks could use a bit of a cleaning, but the fish were active and vibrant, leading me to believe they are healthy. I'll be coming here to stock my tanks!

I would give negative stars if I could! I've spoken to them before about how they treat their Axolotl and nothing has been done to change it. The poor babies are missing toes, missing hands. They always have way too many in a small, cramped tank with harsh lights on them and no place to hide. They also have them in with Dragon Gobies (a tropical and brackish breed that should not be housed with axolotl) This is such a cruel way for them to live.
They also are housing full grown bearded dragons in small tanks with no hides, no temperature gauges, and no access to food or water. The poor thing could barely move in that tank. This is only the beginning of the cruel way they treat their animals. Please do not support this business and report them if you can.

As much as I would rather support mom and pop establishments, I would have to suggest Petsmart or Petco over this place. While the staff is nice and pleasant the owner is absolutely terrible. He is condescending, mean, and obviously does not like to be questioned about the health of his animals. The rodents on his breeding area are in need of clean cages. Snakes appear to need a few feedings, fish tanks that are disgusting to look in, and dont get me started on the birds.
He has one bird allowed to roam free and an African Grey, listed as 20 years old, in a 12" x 12" square cage and the door is padlocked shut. When asked about it I was told to mind my business. I informed them I would not be back to his business again. I've spent countless hours in this establishment and countless more dollars there. Never again!

Great fish store! They always have unique and interesting fish there. Lester, the owner, is there all the time and happy to help customers. Everyone there is incredibly nice, helpful, and knowledgeable. Lester has helped me get certain equipment I needed by ordering whatever he didn't carry. Even bought an African tigerfish here! The customer service there is far better than any petsmart or petCo or chain store. Highly recommend shopping here! Always happy to support local small businesses

Since it's conception in 1930, Animal City has been providing a vast variety of domestic and exotic pets, products, and knowledge. Over the years, I have come to Lester and his team for a myriad of things, and every time he has delivered on exceptional friendly and knowledgeable customer service. Animal City has a sizable selection of all things aquatic.
Common and exotic fish of all sizes, new and used aquariums, aquatic plants, saltwater and even tropical fish too! Fish not your thing? Lester also carries a number of locally bred birds like parakeets, cockatiels and he even stocks up on doves, finches, and canaries from time to time. Feeling furry? Ferrets, various types of hamsters, and locally sourced guinea pigs and rabbits are also available.
If you're feeling a bit more adventurous, Animal City also stocks snakes, lizards, turtles, and an assortment of reptiles. And if you need feeders for any of the creatures listed above, those are readily available. Over the years, Lester has personally helped me set up my "animal" situation. Be it fish, snakes, or even kittens (yes, he periodically has kitties/puppies -- call and ask beforehand!) he's always a huge help and ready to lend a hand! Monday-Friday: 10-8 Saturday: 10-6 Sunday: 11-6

We purchased a baby hand-fed cockatiel and our family has fallen in love with her. The staff was gentle and knowledgeable and allowed us time to select the bird that most fit our family's needs. I received a call the next day asking for a return call regarding the bird's care and history. I spoke to the owner, who couldn't have been nicer, as he explained how the bird was raised, asked about her current condition and told us to please keep them posted as to her welfare as he was ultimately concerned about the bird.
Their selection is amazing. The store is clean. The animals all appeared to be thriving and we're a picky bunch. I would definitely recommend this store over most others. We're very happy with our purchase!

The way they care for the small animals is appalling. Guinea pigs are housed with rabbits. Why is this bad? Rabbits carry pasteurella and can make guinea pigs sick. Guinea pigs and rabbits also need different pellets. The animals look depressed and just a heads up they breed animals in back in plastic bins. These animals deserve better. This business is more concerned with making money than loving animals and finding them happy homes.
