Services
Our facility provides a safe haven for lost and surrendered pets and an opportunity for many families to find the perfect companion. Animal control is provided by the Hastings Police Department and the Adams County Sheriff's Department. At the shelter, animals are cared for with compassion and kindness.
The Heartland Pet Connection staff members care for each of the animals as if they were their own pet. All of the pets receive individual care and attention from the staff and our wonderful volunteers. The adoptable dog kennel can be a howling good time. The recent addition of sound proofing in the kennels has helped many dogs feel more comfortable.
Our Farm Cat Adoption Program began as a trial program in 2014. The Farm Cat Adoption Program is intended to provide placement for cats with behavioral/ litter box issues or temperaments which make them better suited for an outdoor lifestyle. The purpose of this program is to find appropriate outdoor homes for these cats in a farm setting.
Adoption counseling is the best way to ensure a lifelong match between you and your pet. Our staff will answer any questions you may have about our animals during the adoption process. We feel that a personal meeting with you and your family will allow you the opportunity to get to know the pet you may be choosing.

We called on Saturday and set up an appointment for Monday to look at a dog, the lady we talked to was polite and said that the dog we wanted to look at was kid friendly and friendly with other dogs. When my wife and kids went in on Monday with our current dogs to make sure they all get along, the lady was rude to both my wife and kids as soon as they walked in the door and told them that the dog we scheduled an appointment to look at hated kids and other animals.
Maybe that was true and maybe the first lady we talked to was misinformed but how my family was treated and talked to by the second lady was very disrespectful and unfortunately we will never adopt a dog from there

My name is Jim Yeggy, not Matt. The Heartlannd Pet Connection (NLPC) provides a great dog rescue service and has great folks. I adopted 2 dogs from them in March 2016. A 7 year old German Shorthair Pointer female and 3 weeks later her 4 year old son. These folks put a lot of $$ into saving these two dogs, which came to them in November 2015. They were suffering from neglect and had significant health problems when HLPC. Maggie required dental surgery and an infected, open wound that required surgery. Saul came in with eye infections in both eyes which required surgery and open infected wounds that were treated without surgery.
These dogs were kept in kennels but allowed two 30 minute exercise periods each day in an open run area. The dogs were well socialized and received good human contact from the HLPC staff, which were all great with the dogs. They worked with them on basic commands and disipline. HLPC interviewed me and made sure I was a good fit for these dogs before they allowed me to take them. Maggie & Saul are great companions for me and my family. No way HLPC made any $$ on these dogs. The medical costs they put into them was much more than adoption fees.

I would have rated them a zero if possible. The staff don't really seem to care about animals -- as they send a good portion of them off to be euthanized every week. The animals that do survive the cut often just sit in their kennels without any human contact. Once, a blind, diabetic dog ended up there after running away from home. And it sat in a kennel without food or water for many many hours. Truly heartless, greedy people.
