The Hungry Hound is the lifelong dream of owner Penny Milligan, pet lover extraordinaire. Because of her first two Labradors, Max and Dallas, Penny decided to fetch her dream and open a store for dogs in 2003. The Hungry Hound is dedicated to the health and truth of our furry family members. While Max and Dallas are no longer with us, Penny continues to research healthy alternatives for her customers and for Dolly the rescue dog who now [with Talulah's blessing] rules the roost and is often at the store working hard, greeting customers.

This is so much more than a store, it is truly a family. From the first day 12 years ago when I came in with my 15lb Great Dane puppy to today when my senior girl, now around 100lbs, saunters into the store, they have treated her like their own dog. Our dog knows when we walk by the store and always wants to go in. Their knowledge and helpfulness is something you will just not find in a big box establishment.
They have a great selection of dog items even from the smallest dog to the largest Great Dane and all sizes in between. This store is a must for any dog owner. The personalized service cannot be beat.

Amazing local store with unique pet items. Spacious. Conveniently located in downtown Somerville. Literally stumbled upon this place walking around Somerville. They carry some unique brands that I haven't seen in person before. Such a huge selection. Big brands and small brands. I received a sample of the magic dust and my dog fell in love with it. She's a picky eater and the magic dust, which is just dehydrated protein, was a great motivator. The staff was super friendly. I can't wait to come back and bring my pup next time.

I have been visiting the Hungry Hound for years when I come to northern NJ to visit my family. Have always gotten great service & wonderful merchandise (T-shirts, treats for my dogs, cards, mugs, toys). More recently I have had pleasure of having some of the in-house-made treats shipped to me (I live in South Carolina) - my dogs love them! And in April, we got a birthday cake for my dog who came up with me (1 1/2 year old Irish Setter). He loved it! The Hungry Hound will always be one of my regular stops when I travel to NJ.

A favorite spot for home baked treats, specialty items, birthday/gotcha cakes, and so very much more. The wide variety of food and treats and the freshly baked biscuits are unbelievable. And, everything is baked in store! One of our favorite places to shop. There's a friendly and helpful staff ready to answer all your questions. We look forward to our visits, especially Bailey our treat loving lab!

We are really big fans of The Hungry Hound, but more importantly, our doggo is a HUGE HUGE fan of The Hungry Hound! They have such a great variety of items and even carry her size which is XL or XXL even. We love the bandanas there and she looks so cute with them on! Our pup LOVES the treats there! I mean, how could she not? The bakery has a great assortment of treats for her and she devours them! We get her special Easter cookies with her name on them and always get her lots of special birthday goodies too! I highly recommend The Hungry Hound!

Penny and her team are amazing. They keep their kitchen and their store immaculate. The store is HUGE and they have so many great things in stock to keep my Snickers happy! All of their treats are baked FRESH daily - with no salt, sugar, or preservatives. I feel so good knowing that I am giving my puppy a real treat that is actually good for him! I cannot wait to order him his first birthday cake from The Hungry Hound this May!
These are true pet lovers and you can see that Penny and her team really LOVE what they do and who they do it for - Our 4-legged friends! --- ***** UPDATE************************8 Snickers' Birthday Cake was AMAZING! Not only did he LOOOOVE it, there was a huge amount to cut up and save as treats for the days and weeks ahead. It was a HUGE cake - what a value! The presentation and attention to detail were so impressive! I have never seen anything like this!

This is the best and friendliest dog bakery! My Schnauzers have been celebrating birthdays with their cakes and all holidays with their cookies for years! We all look forward to doggie birthday parties and love every cake flavor they make. We have also purchased holiday collars, treats and chews. It's a fun place to shop and gets 10 stars from my crew!

They have fresh, beautiful bakery treats. I get in there for as many special occasions as possible. And the smell is so good, better than a bakery for people. The homemade treats & ice cream are healthy for dogs and very reasonably priced. The staff is always welcoming and delighted you are there. I would definitely recommend you try this doggy spot.

I have been shopping at The Hungry Hound for over 10 years! Never once have I had a bad experience or a problem with any of their products. The staff always treats me and my dogs with kindness when we are in the shop-everyone is always so helpful and patient. The quality of the treats is something I can feed my dogs with confidence-they love them so much and even though I live over an hour away now I will still drive there for special cakes and treats for my them.
I also love that they will ship to me when I can't! Everything always arrives carefully packed looking perfect! I can't say enough good things about Penny and her team! I am a loyal customer and always will be!

I have ordered a variety of special cakes and treats for my granddog Butterscotch from Hungry Hound and they never disappoint. I ordered her a Thanksgiving meal and it was absolutely perfect. Butterscotch enjoyed it and it mimicked our human meal. We have gotten her last 2 birthday cakes there and they have been phenomenal. The level of care and customer service is excellent. The quality of their baked items is outstanding. Everyone is always professional and beyond courteous. I highly recommend them to all fur baby families.

Penny and the team are the best! They get to know all the locals and also serve visitors to Somerville so well. They all know my dog, Joshua so well and treat him like a king! The creativity and passion into this business runs deep and is shared among all when you walk in. Perfect for gifts and perfect for spoiling your fur babies. There is always new things to catch your eye and fun events throughout the year.

We (my puppers and I) love this place! This is not your typical pet store. There is nothing you can't get here for your dog! They have food & treats (the good, healthy kind), collars & leashes (even seasonal), bowls, toys, clothes (for both fur babies and their person) and even home decor! But please remember (especially those of the male species) to put a complimentary band on as to not 'mark' any merchandise, less it's what you're purchasing!
However the best part of this store is the on premise bakery! They make cookies, ice cream, cup/pup cakes and even custom cakes all to make your best friends birthday a smashing success! If you love your dog as much as I love mine, you will absolutely adore this lady run small business! Check them out!

If you are a dog parent, you must stop by here because there are so many things you could buy for your dog. The main reason this place is so awesome is their baked treats, which are all baked onsite in their bakery. They have yummy sounding and looking treats. My dog went crazy over them. They do sell some mini cakes. And, if you want, you can custom order cakes for your dog.
They are all made with wholesome ingredients, so you could even eat them, but not sure if you want to eat a cookie called liver snaps. They have everything you might need for your dog - clothes, bandanas, treats, toys, treatments, beds, and even ice cream. I had to stop myself from buying everything in the store. When I went, it wasn't crowded at all and I had no issues with the staff there. Whoever was helping me was super helpful and answered all my questions. So, if you are in the area, I definitely encourage you to stop by and I bet your dog will be very happy when you come back home with one of their yummy treats. My dog definitely was!

I came here to inquire about yogurt treats for my dog's birthday and the woman behind the counter was extremely rude and unprofessional. When I walked past the bakery counter, I said hello to the employee behind the counter and he refused to speak. I will never return to this store. I saw another reviewer said that they created customized birthday cookies for her dog, but this was never offered to me.
I believe this place was racist because as soon as I walked in the door, the staff made me feel uncomfortable. Another woman in the store also mentioned that she felt uncomfortable. I will purchase from another store, not this one.

Rude staff is happy to show anyone different from them that they are unwelcome. I read another review that a woman was treated rudely because her special needs dog had an accident in the store, which is ridiculous when you invite animals into a store. When you go to Hungry Hound you will notice the lack of diversity in the staff. So, I'm inclined to believe this store does not like anyone (people or animals) that are different/differently abled & tries to let them know loud & clear they are unwelcome. We've never gone back & told our pet parent friends. Pre-Covid; went in to buy a long leash & some treats for the pups with my husband.
Store was decently busy as it was Christmas time but staff was mainly cleaning & organizing rather than being engaged with customers. We noticed staff was pleasant & helpful to everyone else but us. Staff never greeted us, made eye contact with us or offered assistance. Instead whispered to one another as we passed by & made sure to giggle & let us know they found us amusing. (We're just regular people out shopping but fine.) We bought the overpriced long leash because we really needed it, passed the still smirking staff to exit & got back to the car.
Neither of us felt comfortable supporting a business that so goes against our values. So we bought the leash on Amazon (for less) in the car & returned to the shop, minutes later. Immediately after stepping one foot into the store a few members of the staff near the front burst out in raucous laughter. They again never greeted us or made eye contact. However, more than one staffer made sure to cross our path to delay us from walking to the counter while singing along to the Christmas music in an exaggerated show of ignoring us.
The whole experience was really odd. We spoke to the manager who I think came over to take us in line because we'd just bought the leash. She asked why & we told her we were not made to feel welcomed & would not be supporting this business. She seemed to think it was our responsibility to tell her how to fix it but she is the manager. She hired a staff that looks exactly like her (not even one man).
Her failure to read a book on management for the 2020s or get a mentor & fix issues herself is not our responsibility. Also, the merchandise at Hungry Hound, like the staff running it, is nothing special & I suspect they know it.

Such a cool shop! Full onsite bakery for dogs plus a pet shop, such a great concept. From the moment I walked in, I couldn't stop taking pictures! Loved all of the quotes of the walls, my favorite being "A dog is the only thing on earth that loves you more than he loves himself." True of my cats, also. The dog treats are beyond adorable! And the counter is exactly like a human bakery counter with a display case filled with shelves.
There are cookies shaped like a squirrel that are half dipped to look like chocolate. So cute! Of course there are people and dogbone shaped cookies, beautifully decorated cupcakes that if left unmarked, a human will go for it! Layered cakes for birthday celebrations. And my favorite, the K9 Kannoli that look like real cannoli! If you can pull yourself away from the meticulously crafted treats, the store has everything you need for your furry friend and those that love them. Sweaters, leashes, keychains, plaques with wonderful sayings, toys ( many also shaped like bakery items or pizza), breed specific items for those that love pugs, Labrador's, French bulldogs, dachshunds, you get the drift. Saw the sign the night before when my family and I were having dinner next door at Alfonso's.
Even though I don't have a dog or live here, I had to check it out! Really enjoyed strolling through the store and picked up some treats for my brother's dog and a sweater for my friend's pooch for Christmas, if I can wait that long!

Took my special needs dog there for their halloween shoot. After the shoot my dog (with a diaper on) pooped because she is incontinent and has no control over it! I cleaned ALL of it up with no hesitation but was subjected to a lecture and dirty looks from almost ALL of the staff members with the red apron costume. Not offering help or any solution - the woman i believe is the owner came up to me as im cleaning and said "the thing with that is, other dogs will come and go crazy over it.
It really needs to get cleaned properly." As im already cleaning it up! Its disgusting that they supposedly love dogs yet look down upon people with special needs dogs! This is my second time with my special needs dog and both times we were treated horribly. Never giving them a dollar ever again. Surprised a dog store has never seen dog poop before. This is so disappointing. Worst treatment we have ever experienced.

Hungry Hound bakes such fresh baked dog treats that I actually eat some! Penny was able to create the perfect shortbread XL bday bone for our beagle! She even customized it with Hello Kitty since her name is Hello Lady! She didn't overcharge for the details either! Only $10 and that includes custom name and fresh yogurt dog icing! I can't wait for her next bday!

This is a cute little store on Main street to get treats for pets, mainly dogs I believe. I came here to get my dog something for his birthday and left with a cute little biscuit covered in yogurt with "Happy birthday" writing on it. The ladies behind the counter were knowledgeable of the ingredients that were in the biscuits and treats because my dog has a dairy allergy, so it was good to know what I was feeding him. I've visited several times to get treats for my dog and he always eats it all!

Love this place! I come here every year for my little Pitbull Bella's birthday cake. They are made of stuff even humans can eat like yogurt, and the business is small, all cakes made from scratch in house. It's more geared towards small dogs, but they have a lot of cute stuff for all types of dogs (and their humans!).
