With anything, not knowing what you are looking for will make finding it a lot more difficult. One of the most common remarks I receive is "I wish I had gone to you first." My book People Training for Good Dogs has an entire section on the subject. It provides you with questions to consider and ask when choosing who to work with when it comes to developing a life-long relationship with your dog. My Expert Beacon article How to Choose a Dog Trainer also discusses the important factors when deciding on who to work with.

One of the best dog trainers I've met. She knows how to instill good human habits for dog owners and teaches you how to understand your dog and their social needs. She doesn't teach your dog tricks, she teaches you how to be a good dog owner. Her knowledge comes from living her own teachings and years of experience. If you are a first time owner I highly recommend reaching out and working with her to better understand your relationship with your pet and know how to encounter all types of situations. Even seasoned owners can still learn!

Melissa Berryman is the kind of person who tells the mother of a disabled and medically fragile children that they should let that child die. She is the kind of person who will refuse repeated requests to be left alone by that mother. She is cruel, arrogant, and wrong-not the kind of person who should be around people OR pets.
