Dr. John McAfee founded McAfee Animal Hospital in 1943. He graduated from Michigan State University and started out as a 100% large animal veterinarian. He added evening hours in 1948 from 7-8pm Mon, Wed, & Fri to treat small animals. John was a sole practitioner until 1975 when he added his son Larry as a junior partner.
I was born in Valparaiso, Indiana. I attended Purdue University and graduated from veterinary school in 1973. My areas of interest are small animal health, exotic pet medicine, and wildlife rehabilitation. I enjoy the outdoors, especially fishing, and have a lifelong devotion to running. My wife Patti and I have been married since 1974 and we have 2 grown children.
I have been with the McAfee Animal Hospital family since October of 1997. I am married and am the mother of one daughter. I live in Valparaiso and have one dog (Baxter) and one cat (Spencer B). In my free time, I enjoy food and wine tasting, boating and outdoor activities, and vacationing on a beach with family and friends.

Zero compassion! Patient with numerous cats, since the 80s. Had a rapidly declining emergency Saturday. they wouldn't see us. All they said was no appointments, even for an emergency. If a patient calls with an emergency, having worked in customer service for years. you tell them to come in. Will never go back! Hero Pet Animal Hospital in Westville has amazing staff members and actual compassion! Please give them your business! You won't be sorry!

Dr. Danielle managed to help save the lives of several of my pet rats, most notable Mr Bart, who had both a broken tibia and fibula. As a dwarf rat (mouse sized), many vets would have amputated the limb at the detriment to the quality of life of the animal. Instead she patiently put him under multiple times to wrap and rewrap a leg brace after delicately aligning his small bones.
He has gone on to live healthy and unaffected by the injury that many others, even many skilled veterinarians, may not have been able to give him. The kindness of the staff, genuine care of the techs and vets, and even the prices are all worth it here. I recommend McAfee to any pet owner new to the area looking for a good animal hospital that will treat them right.

I recently drove 4+ hours to have growth removed from my fur babies leg. Dr Steve is the best. If you love your baby as I do this is the only Vet I would ever go to. And I have had many loves in my 65 years. Never will I be able to thank the whole staff and Dr. Steve enough. Maggi Mae and I are inseparable and now we have another day to enjoy. A lifelong Michigander.

Called in because my dog was having acute kidney failure and didn't think he would make it through the weekend without intervention. I told the receptionist I really needed a second opinion to see if we could save his life. She had 0 compassion and told me for a new patient there wasn't any availability today and wouldn't be for 3-4 weeks. Again, I told her he would not live that long and she just repeated that they weren't willing to see him since he wasn't established there. Super disappointed

We have used them for years, we have always been completely satisfied with excellent, quality of service and care for our pets. Finnegan's first visit he will remember as everyone made him feel comfortable and joyful! I couldn't ask for more. After going to a few other clinics with my first dog, we found McAfee & never left. We stayed with them until we put our dog down and they were so helpful with the whole painful process. Now 3 years later, we have two young dogs & they have gone here since we got them. I wouldn't even consider going anywhere else. Dr. Brooke is amazing (as is the whole staff) & it's obvious they genuinely want the best for you and your pet! :)

Wow! This place is awesome. I so glad we brought our baby here. He needed hernia surgery. The doctor explained everything and went above and beyond to bring our baby back to good health. All staff members are concerned about your animal s well being. I would highly recommend this place for your pet. We drove 75 miles round trip from Illinois and it was worth the price, visit. I give it 10 STARS

De. Walker has been taking care of Cedric since he was 8 weeks old. He's now 7 months old and is doing amazing. The only time we had any concerns about Cedric's health, Dr. Walker was readily available by phone to address any and all questions we had. His neutering also went so smoothly. McAfee has been taking care of my family's dogs for decades and we've always been thrilled with our service. Cannot recommend this practice highly enough!
