The Free Spirit Siberian Rescue opened its doors in 1999 with the intention of rescuing and finding a home for every husky/husky mix in need of rescue. Fast forward twenty years later, and FSSR has saved over 3000 dogs by helping them find their forever homes! This accomplishment couldn't of been done without the passion and love of animals of our president, Karen Ferreri-Miller. Her desire to allow any animal the second chance of finding their happily ever after is what drives her and all of our volunteers.

Helping those that are helpless because of who we are and reduce the number of homeless Siberian Huskies while improving the welfare and education of Domestic Animals. Karen Ferreri-Miller founded Free Spirit Siberian Rescue in 1999. It was said that we work to foster Respect, Understanding and Compassion for all creatures, and the belief that all life is valuable and worthy of protection. We blend strategy, research, creativity and technology to develop smart, measurable, elegant and effective digital solutions.
Siberian Huskies are athletic and make good walking/hiking/jogging partners in cool weather. Many Siberian Huskies possess a high prey drive which manifests itself by chasing small animals. Before considering this lovely breed there are some potentially negative instincts that you must consider. The following paragraphs provide excellent information so that you can make an informed decision before you decide to adopt a Siberian Husky.
Free Spirit makes every effort to try and match the right Rescue Animal with your family. We do this to make it a safe and fun environment for both the family and the Rescue Animal you have adopted. To meet your expectations, we require that you take your Rescue Animal to obedience training. You may think that obedience training involves the basic commands of "Sit", "Down", and "Wait" but it goes beyond that.
Dogs have always lived in packs. When a dog is adopted, they become part of your pack where there is only one leader (in this case you). The purpose of these exercises is to establish rules and to keep the social order in the pack. They are especially important when starting any training program. You should always eat first before the dog.

Absolutely love Free Spirit Siberian Rescue! When I first found FSSR I was young my family already had 2 other huskies but I promised that one day I'd finally adopt my own FSSR husky. In 2017 my dream finally became a reality and I submitted an application to adopt my best friend. FSSR is mainly volunteer run and it is obvious that every volunteer cares deeply about animals, rescue, and of course huskies! Karen (founder & president), her husband Bob, and all the volunteers work tirelessly to rescue and give second chances to as many dogs as possible.
From what I've seen Karen has a weakness for sick and injured dogs as well has expecting mother's. She has also rescued other animals such as horses and birds that live at the rescue. The application process is thorough to ensure that these dogs get adopted to responsible and loving homes. Once approved you will be adopted to the rescue for a meet and greet.
I really enjoyed this because it gave me one-on-one time with the dogs and volunteers. I was able to ask questions about the dogs and get to know them. I didn't feel rushed and was given the time and space I needed to make my decision. If you are a first time adopter you will wait for the dog to be delivered to you and a home inspection will take place.
The home inspection is just another way to make sure these dogs will be a part of the family. FSSR also makes sure to follow up on the dogs that have been adopted and they have events and other ways for adopters to send updates and stay engaged with the rescue - it's like one big family! Adopting a dog from Free Spirit is one of the best things I've ever done and I'd absolutely do it again and again!

I got my Husky from here 7 years ago. they did a great job with her. I know they drove all the way to North Carolina to give her a chance at life. Yes, go figure, a place dedicated to saving dogs has an application process. They visited my house, required that I take her to training, called my references. I continue to donate to free spirit. I know that when they get money they use it to save dogs. Please support this place - they are making a difference.

I recently started volunteering at FSSR after losing both of my senior huskies this year. Karen and Bob genuinely care for these dogs very much, and the staff is more organized than many not-for-profits I've dealt with in the past. They do the best they can for these dogs despite being short-staffed. If you can't donate or adopt, please consider volunteering with them!
