I brought my cat Bruce in today. I had no appointment and they were completely booked. I told them about my cats issues over the phone and they were kind enough to let me bring him in and fit him in between patients. I was there for a short period of time. Dr. Heim did a wonderful job explaining Bruce's ailment and so did his assistant. She had long blonde hair I don't know her name, but I want to thank her. It wasn't very expensive at all relatively speaking. I've heard horror stories from other veterinarian clinics. This was a happy ending. Thanks Van Loon Hospital. John

Took a scenic drive on the way back from Dr. appt. in LaCrosse and came to Holmen. I remembered an commercial that I had seen on TV about this Vet Clinic that sounded to good to be true so we decided to stop. Yep, you guessed it. It was to good to be true, the commercial was somewhat miss leading. It turns out that they have on Tues and Wed open VET Clinic care which is just vaccinations given, no pet care, and they charged when the commercial sounded like VET care at no cost. Even though commercial, to me, was confusing I found the place to be nice with plenty of space and country charm.

I called to get some paperwork filled out. He was busy but said to bring it in. I took it in and he seen my kitten was due for some shots and said he would give them to him of I brought him in. He has also seen my older kitten who had to have some teeth removed and they made it an easy feel good process. I have also been able to get stuff dones cheaper on Tuesdays when they have the special clinic going.

This is a bit older of a review but I feel I need to tell my kitten's story. He was neutered and came home acting fine. After a couple of days a rash started forming on his face where the mask would have been placed during his surgery. I took him back to Van Loon and the vet was very rough with him. The rash was ringworm and no one else had it and the kitten never went outside.
The vet would not accept responsibility for it even though it clearly came from where the mask was placed. I was told that because the case was so severe I could put him to sleep. That was the only option I was given. I took him to a different Onalaska vet and they were willing to treat him. He lived to 14yrs old. I have never taken another pet to Van Loon and never will.

Like others who write a review, as I'm about to, I can't give zero stars so have to settle for one star. Now, the vet techs are far superior to the actual veterinarian. Now to the veterinarian, Dr Mark Hein. Rushed, rude, dismissive, and arrogant. From the very first puppy well check and shots I didn't get a good vibe from him. My new puppy was terrified every time we had to go in for shots or a normal check up.
A few deal breakers were when this man tried to tell me my dogs age when I had paperwork to prove his ignorance wrong. Their prices for medications, shots and visit were outrageously overpriced. Whenever I'd ask a question, as a new puppy momma, I would be addressed in a curt manner as though I were bothering him and delaying him from the next wallet in the waiting room.
As for a neutering option, I have NEVER had a vet clinic tell me they didn't do pet alterations during the summer months. This one claims to not and pressured us to book an appointment in June. We did. But after getting his explanation of two options for the surgery and the prices associated with said procedures, (which were the most expensive I have ever heard of) I effectively cancelled all future appointments and had the dogs records transferred to another clinic. They didn't even question why I was leaving. They didn't care. Where we take our dog now is beyond extraordinary. I would never recommend VanLoon to ANYONE. EVER.

I wanted to write a review to balance out some of the bad reviews that made me nervous before I went here. I needed to see the vet to diagnose my beloved cat's abnormal urination. The vet tech/receptionist scheduled me for 2 days from the time I called (which is very fast for non-emergent appointments, in my experience). The vet, DVM Hein met me early in the morning.
He was clearly very knowledgeable and thorough. He was gentle with my cat. Some claims that he appeared a danger to people's pets feel, now that I've met him, absolutely ridiculous. He's a bit gruff, but you can tell that's also because he's the only vet working in a busy clinic. I never felt like he wasn't telling me something. The clinic kept my cat to run tests, which he personally reviewed under a microscope to give me a thorough and clear diagnosis.
He obviously cared about getting it right. My cat is diagnosed and on the road to recover. My cat is a sensitive, anxious boy and he appeared in as good a mood as I could anticipate, given the circumstances. Everyone was helpful and friendly, everyone spoke to me clearly and answered my many questions, including questions about less expensive alternatives to in clinic care and in clinic foods.
No one was judgemental, annoyed, or confrontational with me. Busy? Yes. Rude? Absolutely not. I just moved to the area and I'm really glad I found a reliable and competent vet right away, as my animals are extremely important to me. Cat tax attached.

Everything here is about making money instead of providing quality and compassionate vet care for your pets. I cannot even get my dog simple flea treatments approved. I am always told the dog isnt current with exams when said dog has been there not even six months ago! I'm supposed to pay for another appt my dog already had and pay more after that for the treatments.
There is no approval to get them elsewhere but here for the money $$$. Dr. Hein is also very rough with handling and exams. I feel they are rushed. My dog is always very scared and intimidated from this handling. It doesn't come off you can really connect and get questions answered appropriately or compassionately. Service is terrible and lacking.
I contacted for an issue with my dog 2 months ago and never even received a response. I am moving care for my dog to Thompson's vet. Van Loon is absolutely not the place I feel comfortable bringing my animals any longer.

We just had a terrific experience from scheduling to the visit! The Doc was very informative and very pleasant to work with. We had a wellness visit for our kitten that we adopted from the Humane Society. We checked prior with another vet in Onalaska and we were not pleased with the customer service of scheduling. We would recommend Van Loon to all our friends and family!

I adopted a Yorkie from St Louis MO. The staff at Van Loon was very accommodating for the my new pet. I had the full wellness package done, along with having him neutered. It was a two week wait but in this hectic covid season I'm just thankful it was only two weeks. Thank you Van Loon and staff for all your special care, Rebecca Keller
