Services
Fostering allows a shelter pet to seek temporary safety and love by living with you in your home. This program helps to keep us no-kill by reducing overcrowding, preventing illness, and caring for sensitive medical cases. It also gives abused, neglected, and abandoned animals a chance to live in a home where they can begin to develop healthy and happy memories, relationships, and habits, in order recover from trauma.
A Virtual Foster is a volunteer that is assigned an adult animal (cat or dog) to promote. Virtual fosters are encouraged to visit their foster animal at the shelter as and spend a little time getting to know the animal of their choosing. Virtual fosters can spend time with their "foster" on a walk, in the meet and greet room, or on a doggy date.
DOG ENRICHMENT | entertain our dogs with fun treat-based games that engage the brain and teach manners (basic commands, leash etiquette, K-9 nose work, making and distributing peanut butter Kongs to hyperactive dogs, etc.) KENNEL ASSISTANCE | help our Canine staff in the morning with small dog and puppy rooms by helping with newspapering and putting the pups up!
Enrich our shelter dogs' lives and increase their chance for adoption by becoming a WOOF PACK volunteer! We utilize ONLY positive reinforcement methods. WOOF Pack volunteers will get a hands on dog training experience. Meredith is a Certified Professional Dog Trainer and recently works part time at Shelby Humane Society, working on behavior modification with shelter dogs experiencing issues with extreme fear, reactivity, and resource guarding.

Horrible people who don't respect their employees. The director doesn't care about the animals. They lie about which animals are adopted. "No kill" does NOT mean that they don't euthanize. If you try to foster, they refuse to talk to you or help with supplies. I've personally seen dead animals in kennels. Last time I volunteered I was told by HR (Kathleen) that I was a liar and I needed to leave. 0/10 would not recommend for people or animals.

Don't waste your time completing an application to reserve an animal! I did exactly that, and was suppose to go for our appt at 4. Well, they had someone come in earlier and adopt not just one, but the entire litter before our appt. That's terrible! If it's 1st come 1st serve then don't have applications available on the website for a particular pet. And, why are there so many puppies sitting in the cages adopted!

I was told I had to meet with the puppy 1st. I don't have a problem with that at all. I guess I'm just confused as to how my puppy was adopted before my approved application and appointment was met, but you have puppies sitting in cages adopted?! Go figure.

Love everything you all do to help animals! They do an exceptional job at keeping the plan clean and the animals taken care of! Visited this location twice so far. Spoke to a lady about adoption yesterday, I was disappointed that she did not help me or encourage me in any way to proceed with adoption. She is vague and reluctant to answer my questions which I found very odd.

I did not end up adopting because of the lack of information. Another lady who thought she was being helpful provided me with misinformation about the intake date on the dog I was interested in adopting and was adamant on having me be a 100% sure about adopting with the lack of information and misinformation. I wish she took the time to speak to me.

I was not planning on adopting if I wasn't a 100% sure either but needed someone to answer my questions without getting the feeling that I was wasting their time. I had an appointment which is highly commended. Without an appointment, you will NOT be assisted, as previous reviews posted. On my first visit I was not aware and went without an appointment and no one was available to answer my questions.

Lady at the front desk did apologize to me which I was professional and I appreciated that. I know that not all volunteers are the same and realize that my experience with a couple of them there does not define everyone else who dedicates their time to this facility and the animals there.

Amazing place, clean, very respectful people, not rushing people out the doors, taking time with each person that comes in, asking questions, and taking time to help and get you to understand what needs to be done! I will be sending more people to this shelter! Thank ya'll so much for helping us today!

If I could possibly give zero stars I would. They say the dogs adopted are chipped and well taken care of. We had our new boy checked out at the vet and not only did he not have a chip he is also very underweight for his build and is either sick with his belly, has tapeworms or both. When we picked him up he was covered in pee and took several baths before the water was no longer yellow.

They had him for 6 months so there's no excuse for him to be as underweight as he is. It sounds like puppy mill tactics to keep them lethargic and "calm" for families to adopt an actual sick dog.

We just adopted today! The staff had been very polite and friendly with us. This was also my first time personally getting to adopt so for me it was a huge deal. Apryl was our adoption counselor they had been a huge help we couldn't be happier! Sadly I never caught the name of the front desk employee but they had also been a huge help! I'd strongly encourage anyone willing and able to foster/adopt these wonderful pets that need a forever home! To all the staff thank you very much!

We drove up from Montgomery on a Saturday afternoon with intentions of adopting one of the senior dogs. Granted, we did not have an appointment but we knew exactly which dog we were interested in adopting and had submitted the adoption application prior to going. We called as we left and left a message but nobody answered or called back to at least tell us not to waste our time driving up.

I guess we really expected to not be turned away, rather rudely, by the lady at the front desk saying that people with appointments came first and they had no time for us, when we were there to take a senior dog to a loving forever home. With full time jobs, school, and busy lives we probably won't be able to get back up here and after being treated so rudely, don't want to deal with this particular shelter anyway.

These dogs need homes! There were so many there with the saddest faces you've ever seen. We were able to take this sweet one out for a bit to see how he would fit with the fam. But they all had that "take me with you" look. If only I could.

I came from Atlanta Georgia to adopt a puppy and was not disappointed call. I felt as though they were very professional friendly informative and for a shelter compared to others I have seen very clean your phone. I did about the puppy that day and I'm very pleased.
