Services
Hopalong & Second Chance Animal Rescue is a non-profit organization whose mission is to eliminate the euthanasia of adoptable animals throughout Northern California. Since our founding in 1993, we have collectively saved over 24,000 animals, placing them in loving, permanent homes. We also provide spay/neuter services, animal advocacy and humane education in schools and in after school programs, and community outreach on the benefits of spay/neutering and the critical need for animal adoption. From our office in the East Bay, CA, hundreds of volunteers and a small staff work tirelessly with shelters to rescue animals at risk of euthanasia.
Woodlands Pet Food and Treats (Mill Valley, Greenbrae, Novato & San Rafael), Your Basic Bird in Berkeley or See Spot Run (Alameda), anytime during normal business hours. Kittens @ all the stores can be adopted out directly from there. You don't need to fill out an online application for the kittens listed as being at those locations-you can go directly there to meet them and move forward with the adoption process. We strongly recommend calling the individual stores before heading over to confirm the kittens you're interested in are still available.
Are you aware that the average cost of feeding and caring for a dog can be $1,000 per year or more? Are you prepared to make a commitment to this animal's lifetime that could last between 10-20 years? I certify that the above information is true and correct to the best of my knowledge. I further agree that any adoption made on the basis of this questionnaire is null and void if any of these statements are untrue. I understand that Hopalong Animal Rescue's main concern is that all pets be properly cared for by their owners.

I've fostered for Hopalong for 12 years and finally had a foster-fail moment with my new fur baby. Juliet and Alex are amazing and their love for these animals is apparent in everything they do. I would recommend Hopalong as a wonderful agency to foster for and to find your furry friend. Five Stars and a loud WOOF WOOF to this team!

When I applied to adopt a puppy from here, I was worried because the holidays were delaying responses from the foster family. But, they honored the application and let me have first dibs on the puppy during a mobile adoption event. So many people had been interested in the puppy, and the other dogs at the event were adopted too. I'm very glad they rescue so many pups and have a screening process to make sure the dogs end up in a good forever home. Also, I got a bunch of free stuff from an affiliate. Basics, like food, a collar, and a leash. Very helpful because I hadn't purchased anything yet in case I went with a larger dog or something. Thanks so much for helping me find a soulmate in my pup!

We adopted our sweet pup nearly 8 years ago. Hopalong let me and my son meet her, spend several hours with her and then time to meet the rest of the family, including our dog. I was also able to meet the foster mom and ask her questions. Hopalong let us take our time to make sure it was a good fit. Not all organizations do that-- another org gave me 15 minutes(!) when we were interested in adopting a dog. I'm glad I went with Hopalong!

I walked into the petco in alameda and didn't even make it past the front door mat. I fell in love with this little runt of the litter! My boyfriend and I had to have her to an addition to our family. The staff at petco was beyond helpful but the woman I spoke with on the phone with hopalong was so warm and kind while giving us our interview. I absolutely love how their organization handles themselves!
I just received my holiday packet thanking me for our adoption and varies donations. Look for your fur-ever baby through this beautiful rescue! They truly care about the animals that they care for. I adopted this beauty (Autumn) a year ago today and she is fur-sure my kitty soul mate! Thanks again hopalong!

Tina is the best foster mom ever! Tina, Gary, and Nulo are such warm and wonderful people. They did a fantastic job helping me navigate the adoption process. It's been difficult to get a rescue doggy during the pandemic, but because of them I have a new best friend! Tina and Gary treat each and every foster dog so well. They provide premium food for their foster babies (and even cook for them!), spoil the heck out of them, and provide the best possible interim environment for them before they go their furever homes. Tina was always accessible throughout the adoption process.
The family welcomed me into their home several times to visit my baby Momo and bond with her before she was ready for me to take her home. Tina is also a fount a knowledge and gave me so much invaluable advice. Tina and Gary care so much about their foster babies and go above and beyond to ensure each and every one of them is matched well with a compatible family who will provide a loving home. I'm so grateful to them!

We adopted the most perfect dog from her foster mom, Tina. We had an old dog that we knew would not make it through another year. I met Tina at the pet store, Unleashed, on Lakeshore during a Halloween costume contest. I had our old girl with us. Tina had three foster dogs with her. They were all happy, healthy and well adjusted. I fell in love with Mama and a week later we adopted her. Mama had 6 months with our old dog, Baby (their actual names) and made the transition for all of us so much easier. Mama has been such a gift and having Tina and Gary in our lives has also been a treasure.
I will only adopt dogs from Tina. She and Gary are the most committed foster parents in the world. The adoption process was extremely easy with Tina and Hopalong. Tina and I worked out a way for Mama to be in her forever home in the best possible way for us and for Mama. Mama and I have visited Tina and Gary and all the puppies they have fostered since.
They are selfless when it comes to fostering found litters of tiny, tiny newborn puppies that have been abandoned in a cardboard box. They get up every two hours to eye dropper feed them, then bottle feed them, then help them grow into self-sufficient puppies. In the year and a half that I have known Tina, I think over 30 puppies (maybe more) have been successfully adopted from her. Hopalong is very, very lucky to have Tina (and Gary) in their roster of foster parents.

We cannot say enough good things about Hopalong and Tina. We were casually looking for just the right dog when we met Tina. She was kind enough to invite us to her home to meet her puppies where we met and fell in love with our little Marvel, he is the puppy of Mama who is mentioned below. We visited her home multiple times to play with Marvel and Tina asked us lots of questions about ourselves, our lifestyles, and how we viewed topics like discipline, health and exercise, and sleep arrangements for our dogs.
She allowed us to fall in love with Marvel while making sure that we would be a good fit for him. The adoption process was smooth and we had no problems bringing our little guy home. We maintained contact with Tina and consider ourselves lucky to call her a friend. We loved our experience with Hopalong and Tina so much that a year after getting Marvel we contacted Tina about getting a sibling for our dog, and she promptly told us she had the perfect puppy for us.
We have two wonderful dogs thanks to Tina and we have seen all the hard work she puts into caring for her puppies and finding them the perfect forever homes. Each dog leaves her home to a new deserving family that gives them the best possibly home because of her hard work.

We were so lucky to have been introduced to Hopalong through a friend. While looking for a second pup to adopt into our family, we met the team at Hopalong and the entire process was well-managed. Tina and Gary, the foster parents of our adopted Lotus, were so kind and caring during Lotus' adoption. They were so helpful and had taken such great care of Lotus and the dogs under their care that we worried we would let them down in some way! Could not recommend Hopalong enough, and a million thanks to Tina and Gary for the love they provide for their fosters.

We adopted our puppy from Hopalong in January 2020. She was fostered by Tina who is absolutely hands down the greatest foster any dog could have. I am floored by any negative comments. She IS picky about potential adopters and for very good reason. There are so many people out there that should never have a dog. She has a keen eye for choosing the right person.
She has hand raised many puppies that were dumped that were literally days old and raised them to be amazing dogs. She is absolutely incredibly caring, and nurturing and wants the best for every dog. Her own dog has been the nanny to all the puppies and dogs she has fostered. I cannot say enough great things about this organization. They are incredibly lucky to have such a wonderful foster mom.

After our two oldest pups passed away, we were going to wait before considering adopting again. However, our youngest pup, a husky girl that had grown up with both of them started showing major signs of depression. We went to several sites and even visited the SPCA a few times but nothing felt right. Luckily we ran into Hopalong online, by pure chance, we looked at their site and found a pup that we instantly connected with.
We went to their adoption event, and after going through their screening, we walked away with a really sweet and handsome boy. He keeps his sister entertained and lifted her and us from that horrible funk of having lost our oldest boys. Hopalong truly cares for the animals, and that should always come first.

After reaching out to Hopalong requesting that the concerns I posted below be shared with their Board of Directors, I was gravely disappointed to receive both: 1) an unsolicited email from one of the 3 Hopalong employees referenced in my initial post 'Dani' with ccs to the other 2 listed in my complaint [her direct report 'Emily' and her supervisor 'Julia'] rife with falsities alleging I "tried to manipulate (them) into bending (their) site, foster, and adoption policies to suit (my) wants."; & 2) a non-factual response to my initial post from another one of the 3 Hopalong employees (Hopalong's Executive Director) 'Julia' who was also named in the complaint in my opinion equating to libel.
The irony of this is that instead of conducting due diligence when I raised concerns about Hopalong kitten Banana's welfare, Dani chose to harass me instead by sending me unsolicited email inclusive of the following threat, "Any further communication between you and our staff, volunteers, or any Hopalong animals will be considered harassment and we will seek legal means of restraint." + Julia chose the same posture without interviewing me or any witnesses I can produce re: what actually occurred. Sounds like a great strategy to cover up for unconscionable conduct by a yet another group of narcissistic non-profit 'execs.'

These people do care about these animals. Ive been to many pop-up adoption spots and I always see the staff holding and petting the animals. My dog finally found us, we are so happy with our little Maximus. Thank you hopalong, it's not a easy job. Thank you fosters for opening your homes and hearts.

These days, it's so hard to find a trusting and loving animal rescue! HAR, is just AMAZING! For some reason a mother cat (which Is now FIXED) abandoned her babies on the side yard of our home, just 1 day old. Thankfully, we found a fabulous bottle feeder, she cared for them just days old. At 5 weeks as WE promised, we took them to our home fostered them for 2 weeks at 5 weeks old!
I got the call that they will take them in. As I balled my eyes out in tears on the way there AND on the way home, I told myself that they are in good hands! Days go by, the better we are and so are they! I have been in contact with Lana the past 2 weeks checking in on the fur-balls, and she always replies very quickly with updates for us :) We are so happy with our experience with HAR.
We highly recommend them to anyone looking for a pet! I know the kittens have probably forgotten about us, but we will never forget them. I would like to thank ALL the foster parents and vouleneers associated with HAR. You guys are awesome and deeply appreciated! Thank you, Heather Paganelli

So disappointed service. We (me/hubby) lost our dog last year ( not an accidental, we had good 14year and she just passed away by ages) and decided to adopt from Hopalong this time. We read carefully to process and sent a application, waited more than 2days to their reply and finally got a mail to come to meet adoption event on Saturday. I took dayoff for work and ready to meet him but now Thursday afternoon.
I checked HP again and WTF he was adopted!? Why? We had plenty of time and of cause could make a time to meet him at foster home if they gave us a note. This is not fare and such a heartbreaking. We are so shocked. This was supposed to be a our first time to adopt a dog bc we always asked for pure bleeders. But we wanted to help a dog and wanted to give a good life. Ofcause we still look for another but this bad bad experience really made us disappointed and tons of questions for adoption.
Hope the doggy is good hand now. Ps/. Thank you for reply. But yes YOU DID NOT MENTION that if we can see the dog before day of adoption, you just told us by email ( no one answered call) someone came to picked up already when I asked. But it's ok, we could adopt one from other and we are happy now. 5/9/2018

First of all my fiance and I want to give a big shout out to Casey and Melanie for helping us with the process. They were able to screen us in a timely manner along with giving us up to date info about which dogs were/weren't available. We are so excited that we showed up to the Alameda Pet food Express 1 hour early. When seeing the adoptable dogs, I was actually looking at Sage at first because she ran up to us while my fiance really wanted Pistacio.
We ended up choosing him because he looked like my previous dog Legend.and because she wanted him. So it all worked out. And that same day I actually proposed to my gf. So technically it was 2 surprises in one day. It's been 3 weeks and he is doing great! We have named him Dartanian(Reference to Stranger Things also from the 3 Musketeers). Thank you guys so much for this opportunity. You guys are great and would definitely recommend you to our friends and family!

I adopted a kitten from Hopalong via Your Basic Bird in Berkeley. I would have loved to adopt an adult cat but my husband has had some allergy issues and we thought he might adapt to a kitten easier which he did. No allergies to speak of (not that it would have changed anything because the cat was staying no matter what. If there is any scenario where you would give up your adopted pet then you should not get a pet. Also, you're a bad person) He was already neutered, micro-chipped, and had all the shots that were required up to that point.
The cost to adopt him was totally reasonable based on the services they had provided (about $150, I think). It's also a good thing that it costs that much because it discourages people who don't take pet ownership as a serious and expensive responsibility. On a side note, the cat is an awesome guy and I feel very lucky to have found him.

Update from original post: Hop-along reached us via email. Turns out this dog has their chip but it's not their dog. The owner ended up calling the microchip company and getting their dog back from the shelter. Hop-along insists they do Not adopt out unaltered animals. In addition, the microchip was dating back 8 years ago but the dog did not look older than 4 years old.
But the how this dog came to have their microchip is still a mystery. I really do appreciate that they finally reached out to us and followed up on what happened to the dog. Original post: We found a dog with a microchip leading back to this organization. We have tried multiple times to contact them and they have not returned our calls. The dog we found was clearly not spayed as she was very pregnant.
So how is this rescuing if neutering of pets is not a priority for adoption? No telling how many litters this dog has had perpetuating the overpopulation problem. We had to turn her into the local shelter as we couldn't keep her.

Our little baby turned 1 today! Well not really. When we got her they said she was 1.5 years old and estimated a birthday in April. I'm pretty sure she was younger than that and the reason I say she turns 1 today is because we got her exactly 1 year ago today (so an anniversary really). I love my kitty like crazy, and am so glad we found her. She's got a lot of personality.
A lot of spunk. Sure she's wild and crazy and climbs the walls but I wouldn't have it any other way. She greets us at the front door with her toys to play fetch, she snuggles every chance she gets, and she head butts and kisses on command. We loved adopting from hopalong so much that we're considering adopting one of their dogs that's been up on the site for awhile.
