Learn about spay/neuter assistance, veterinary care, rescue, foster, adoption, humane education, legislative advocacy, and volunteering. The purpose of the Corporation shall be to improve the facilities, treatment and environment for the benefit of animals impounded at governmentally sponsored animal shelters throughout the State of Rhode Island and at such other animal shelters as shall be approved by the Board of Directors, from time to time; to assist in the reunion of lost pets and their owners; to promote the adoption of animals from shelters; to promote humane education by conducting educational programs; to assist local governments and others in promoting leashing, licensing, inoculation, spaying and neutering; and generally to do and perform any and all acts incidental to the foregoing purposes; but not for pecuniary profit or financial gain of its officers or directors, except as permitted by Rhode Island Law.

Volunteer Services for Animals (VSA) was started in 1979 by a group of conscientious people dedicated to improving the quality of animal shelters. Since our start, we've helped improve conditions and the standard of care at shelters throughout Rhode Island. Due in great part to VSA's efforts, most shelters now provide veterinary care for sick animals and provide inoculations against rabies and distemper. One of VSA's most effective programs to date is the promotion of spaying and neutering of companion animals because it decreases euthanasia rates.
The obvious benefit of neutering a pet is that it prevents the animal from breeding, but neutering can also help your pet live a longer healthier life. Surgical removal of the ovaries and uterus eliminates the chance of a female developing cancer of the ovaries and infections of the uterus. When this surgery is preformed before the animal is one year old, it also reduces the risk of breast cancer.
You can do your part to prevent more cats and dogs from being abandoned to the streets or entering shelters by spaying or neutering them. In Rhode Island, it is the law that all owned cats must be spayed or neutered by six months of age. Cats can be spayed or neutered earlier, as they can start reproducing at five months of age.
This VSA message is about the wrongful use of words in order to draw an analogy for wrongful behavior. Example: "He was treated like a dog." We have heard this expression used many times lately to describe the unspeakable treatment of a human at the hands of other humans. Though maybe not immediately understood by all, these words condone and convey a message of animal cruelty.
