The Sioux Falls Area Humane Society was first founded in 1910, becoming a recognized organization in 1919. Our first location was located at 110 East 10th Street, which is now a Lewis store! In 1926, they moved their operations to 700 South 8th Avenue, into a 7-room house that was to be used for headquarters for the humane society to use for children and unwanted animals. In 1947, land was purchased north of the penitentiary at 2105 North Drive. The humane society was renovated in 1964 and 1977 while at this location.
Thank you for looking into joining our team! If you would like to consider volunteering, we are always on the lookout for animal lovers willing to donate their time to the pets! Visit our volunteer page. Our Humane Officer role is a very key position in our community. The role assists and provides services out in the field in accordance with municipal contracts.

Not sure who we talk to on the phone but they acted like it was a burden to answer a few questions. The second thing I was really disappointed in is the hassle it takes just to few some animals. The shelters where I'm from you can walk in and see what they have and take your time to see if it will be the right one but here you can only see the animal that you setup an appointment with.
The staff when we arrived was very kind and did work with us. So it ended well. Just sad that someone is trying to save an animal and has to be restricted while trying to find the right one. But to each is own.

My dogs were microchipped here, I called ahead of time and they said i could come in and be out within 15 minutes. All 3 of my dogs were microchipped, they were very patient with even my bad behaved pup. I think the microchips were 20$ a dog which is incredibly fair in pricing! If and when I add another member to my family, I will be back!

If I could give zero stars I would. The application process is ridiculous. I applied for a kitten, waited a couple days without hearing anything so I called. I asked if they had gotten my application and whoever I talked to would not even look to see if they had received it. This lady was just very rude in general and clearly did not want to talk to me or help me with any questions I had.
I call back a couple days later and this time someone else answered and she told me they had received my application and just needed my proof of address and ID, so I emailed them that. Few days go by and I still don't hear anything. So I call again. I talked to someone else this time and she told me they had not received my ID or proof of address and also needed my landlords number.
I send them all of that, this time I call back after a few hours to make sure they received my email. I talk to yet another woman and she said they had my ID and proof of address but not my landlords number (so she was clearly looking at the first email I sent them). I give her my landlords number over the phone. Still I hear nothing after a few days.
I call again and I am told they need my ID, proof of address, and landlords number. All of this took 3 weeks. My girlfriend also applied for a kitten here and had almost the exact same thing happen to her. I had had enough. I eventually looked at other shelters and ended up adopting a cat from another shelter. At this other shelter from time of applying to me taking my new baby home was less than 24hrs.

We love to volunteer when we can! We recently fostered some puppies for the humane society and found it to be a great, fulfilling experience! Would do that, again! Amazing staff that go above and beyond for these animals! Meghan especially is so devoted to the animals! She really goes above and beyond!
