Lydiah, the cat featured on our cover, was transferred to us from the Humane Society of Tulsa when severe flooding displaced dozens of pets. After the flood, we transferred in 40 homeless cats and dogs to help them find homes.

Services
Thank you for your interest in working for the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA. As a nationally recognized organization, we are committed to making a positive difference in the lives of the animals in our community. You have the opportunity to become a part of this exciting, positive, innovative and professional organization.
Requests must be submitted a month in advance of the event date. Please provide us with 72 hours to respond. Because the CASPCA relies heavily on donations (monetary and in-kind), we ask that you provide a list of potential donations from local businesses and/or corporations for the proposed event. This will help us avoid conflicts of interest and ensure transparency.
In addition to functioning as a nonprofit animal shelter, the Charlottesville-Albemarle SPCA serves another important community function by providing pound services to the City of Charlottesville and Albemarle County. Local governing bodies, such as the City and County, must provide certain pound services in accordance with guidelines established by the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services.
When it comes to saving the lives of pets, we are a full-service organization! Rescuing and adopting out less-sociable cats as warehouse, farm, brewery, or plant nursery workers is one of our most successful programs here at the SPCA. All of our available working cats are healthy, spayed or neutered, microchipped and vaccinated.

I have adopted multiple dogs and cats from CASPCA and have been super pleased with their support. I have found lost animals & unfortunately had to give back animals that weren't the right fit with my other animals. I have fostered and found the foster care people amazing. The vet clinic is also awesome. I also love that they save so many animal lives from Texas and the Buckingham County animal shelter. They are all angels for what they do!

I think this shelter is amazing. All of the adoptions counselors, foster coordinators, and volunteers are extremely hard working. A lot of people don't get to see the behind the scenes work. Everyone assumes you can just pick and choose animals and that's not the case. So many rescue animals need love and care and medical attention before they can become available for adoption.
The employees are under huge scrutinity a lot of the time because people don't see the other side of things. They don't see the stress and fear that some of the incoming animals have experienced and how much love and compassion the employees put in to making sure they find a good home. Please think about how much work the employees and volunteers do everyday and what they have to witness on a daily basis before leaving a bad review and scrutinizing them.

This is not about the dogs and other animals at the shelter, but the staff - specifically at the front desk. How can someone be so, so short, rude, and evidently bothered by someone coming in (on their busy schedule) to offer volunteer services. I hope other volunteers are at least treated with respect.

Felt very discriminated against today. You guys had an Adoption event at Habitat Restore. I drove an hour away from Harrisonburg to be there from 10 am-1 pm as scheduled. I arrived a little before 10 am because I know an event like this is first-come, first-serve. They didn't come until after 11 am because you know they got "lost" 10mins away. When they arrived, they brought out a beautiful puppy; I asked many questions about the puppy name, age, breed, etc.
My son carried her and petted her first, and fell in love. I called my friend, a puppy dog except for her input. 20mins later a white woman arrived and said she had put in an application for this puppy and was scheduled to see it. The worker proceeded to speak with the white woman, and just like that, this puppy was unavailable. I asked why to bring a booked dog, and she responded by saying this was our only puppy and I wanted to bring her, sorry. No, she wasn't adopted; the white women just put an application for her.
My thing is if it was the other way around, that I a Spanish person put in an application for a puppy I saw on the website, and then should up super LATE TO AN ADOPTION EVENT AND SAW THE PUPPY THERE, would they have responded to the white women that had driven an hour away and wait over an hour and pet and carry the puppy first than everyone else.
Will they have said, "sorry (Spanish women, me), but you haven't actually booked this puppy yet, and this white woman has been here waiting, and she got to pet the puppy first. Thank you so much for teaching my son a lesson today that no matter how early you arrive, some white person can come late and still win.

My husband and I found a kitten that was abandoned about 6 months ago and we took Loki to the SPCA they neutered him for us. their service was great! Loki had something wrong inside of his ear and they noticed that and were able to fix that he has an appointment coming up in 2 weeks so he can be completely healed. they were great with working with us and great with working with Loki!

OMG, I can't imagine a better shelter. Just adopted my 3rd dog in 5 or 6 years, a Pit/Pug, a Catahoula mix from NOLA (look it up, State Dog of LA), and now a Blue Heeler/Pit mix that I've had for 2 weeks. I foster for them too. Much respect much love to CASPCA, especially Katie, in charge of adoptions.

From the first year to 14 years later Sniper has been our best addition. He gave us almost a total of 14 great years. Not needy nor selfish, mean nor angry. Just this big gentle giant. I knew he was getting slower and had less control but didn't want to have to make the decision and he didn't make us. He passed away last night in his sleep still leaving a broken heart in his wake.
We had no idea what or how we would deal with his remains. There are options but most are beyond the grasp of middle class or lower income families. That doesn't mean we are lacking in any way as great owners. We wanted to give him the respect and dignity he deserves. Charlottesville Albemarle ASPCA didn't take any time nor haggling about money just told us to bring him in.
There were fees but nothing like the hundreds of dollars to just walk in the door of some of the local Veterinarian offices. Others wanted to charge extra because of his size. This is the last thing you want to deal with after your loved one passed. I can not say thank you enough to your kindness and the excellent staff that took care of our sweet sweet boy Sniper!
