This practice killed my dog, DO NOT USE FOR SURGICAL NEEDS. I picked my dog up from a routine dental procedure on a Friday afternoon. He was still incredibly lethargic from the anesthesia. The tech who delivered him to our car assured me it was from the anesthesia and that he would be loopy for the next day or so. The following day, I immediately tried to administer his pain pill using food and treats.
He refused to eat anything. I called the after hours line at least five times and received no callbacks and no help. I was finally able to administer the prescribed pain pill. He continued to be lethargic and uncomfortable for the remainder of the day which I attributed (based on what I had been told from the vet tech who delivered him to our car on Friday) was due to the anesthesia and the pain pill.
He was drinking water but still not eating. If any VET from Island Animal Hospital had returned my call, offered ANY help or advised me to seek further medical assistance I would have driven across the country to get my dog the care he needed. I planned to take him to the Savannah ER Vet Sunday morning if I couldn't entice him to eat and he was still lethargic/ loopy because I received zero guidance from this practice.
A practice that performed 12 extractions on a senior dog on a Friday afternoon. I had NO idea that this office was no longer open on Saturday mornings or I would never had agreed to a Friday surgical date. What I thought I was observing was the effects of anesthesia and the pain pill (based on what I had been told at discharge). Instead, my dog was slowly dying.
When we awoke early Sunday morning, Winston was dead. The way my dog's case was handled was completely unacceptable, unprofessional, and medically negligent. To remove 12 teeth (without permission or approval from the owner) from a senior dog's mouth and then provide ZERO availability in terms of follow up assistance is inexcusable. My child and I were completely traumatized by this experience and have lost an incredibly important member of our family in a way that was clearly avoidable had we been provided proper after care.
The only positive thing I can say about the practice at this point is that their employee Samantha Dickenson was incredibly empathetic and helpful to our family. Island Animal Hospital later refunded my money and assured me that the practice of doing surgeries late on a Friday afternoons and providing zero follow up and misleading aftercare advice was being changed to avoid similar tragedies. Unfortunately, it has recently been brought to my attention that Island Animal Hospital continues this dangerous practice, risking the lives of other pets that are entrusted to them. I feel obligated to share Winston's story if it could save even one family from the pain ours has experienced.

We recently moved to St Simons and choose this clinic because it was convenient. We have boarded our dog there and he loves it. They are friendly and seem to genuinely care for our dog. I love the way he smells when we pick him up. We also had him groomed there as well. It was a very professional job. He looked the best he has ever looked. I look forward to when we can go into the clinic to meet all the staff.

My dog truly likes to come to Island Animal Hospital. He gets very excited when we turn in the driveway to the facility."Benjamin" knows immediately where we are and starts making " happy sounds" and barking for me to hurry up and park the car. The attendant comes out to get get him and he is so happy to go w/ her. If he is boarding there, he must have a great experience each time as he is always happy when I return for him.
His behavior report and daily habit/activity report are always positive. Because he is treated w/such kindness and friendly attention, his happiness is very evident when I return to take him home. His appearance is always well groomed, his attitude is happy, he is well fed, and seems very happy and content--- never have I left him feeling uneasy about his total well being.
His happy attitude when we arrive at Island Animal Hosp tells the entire story. A dog's attitude tells everything about his care and friendly devotion by his caretaker----yes even at the Vet's office and boarding facility. I highly recommend Island Animal Hosp.to anyone looking for the best Vet care for their pet.
