Critical: Professionalism, Responsiveness Kept putting me on hold and was rude, wanted to get 2 pitbull pups fixed using a voucher given out by humane society, if they don't want to do it just say so! Instead of just putting me on hold again and again, guess you have to be one of these rich new people that moved here! Sad!

I called ahead for a Friday walk in around noon, anticipating scheduling a visit for Monday because I was concerned but didn't have urgent concerns. Based on the details I provided, I was told to come right in and that the vet would drive in to be there when I got there. My cat was given an X-ray (I declined the $160 blood work) and then I was told that there was a significant blockage and the cat would need fluids to address major dehydration.
This process took about 1.5 hours because the vet, who had just arrived (specifically for me), apparently had other patients and couldn't get to looking at the X-ray. I was told that if this blockage was not addressed, it could necessitate surgery. At 1:30pm, I was told I would need to go to a different vet because the vet at San Juan wanted to go home at 2pm. (Normal hours are until 5pm).
This was blamed on weather, but it had only snowed about one inch and the roads were barely wet. It's also winter in Pagosa. I was told that it was urgent to go to the other vet because my cat was "very sick". The staff at San Juan told me that the cat would need hours of IV fluids and they didn't have time (because of leaving early.) I went to another vet because of these apparently "urgent" needs. (Remember, it was San Juan that asked me to come in right away.) The second Vet (at a different clinic) ran labs, looked at the X-ray, and said my cat was actually fine. apparently the vet at San Juan confused gas in the X-ray with a major blockage.
He gave fluids under the skin (a five minute process) to address the possible minor dehydration. I left the second vet after about 30 minutes. I'm honestly not sure there ever was an actual vet looking at my cat or at the X-ray at San Juan. I never saw them and only saw the techs and receptionist. They happily took my money though. I was previously a regular client with another pet but will never go here again and will strongly discourage others from it too.
In other considerations- this vet refuses to write you a prescription for your pet meds. They require you to purchase meds from their in-house pharmacy. Often times, this means a medicine you could get for $10 online is going to cost you closer to $100.

Our experience was great! The staff was friendly and helpful. The vet had a full schedule, but they let us drop our dog off so they could fit him in between appointments. The vet had to put our dog under for an ear exam. While he was out, they even trimmed his nails! We will definitely bring our pups back!

In most cases you are able to get in fairly quickly to have your pet seen by a vet. It would help to have some extended weekend hours for folks that work and live out of town to obtain the services they need. Having vet coverage available in the community is very important 7 days a week. Because you are a tourist town it is something that should be expanded upon as a community effort. The staff and vet have been very good to work with since we started going with you. Thank You for supporting our pets!

When I called to make an initial appointment I expressed that my dog was feeling"under the weather" and it was not an emergency. The receptionist scheduled an appointment which worked for my schedule perfectly. Before I hung up, she stressed to me if our dog was not getting better that I should not hesitate to call- I thought her listening skills were spot on- this reassured me that I called the right place!
Upon arrival to the vet, the staff at the desk were very friendly and welcoming and the vet tech Sandra was very thorough with the information gatherered and relayed to the Doc. The entire staff made our initial visit quite pleasant! I highly recommend San Juan Veterinary to anyone!
