Founded in 1966, our mission is to build a more compassionate community by teaching humane messages to our youth, caring for homeless animals and strengthening the human-animal bond. Our location-based animal shelter serves the pets and families of Benton County and Corvallis with animal welfare programs and humane education.

If you're looking to go adopt a dog I will always put this shelter at the top of my list. they take so much care for these dogs they love them with every second they have with them. They dogs are well taken care of and even I have adopted from here and seen the care and it's absolutely perfect. Heartland has a wonderful staff team!

If you want to go adopt a dog from this place, I would advise not. It's in a very creepy location. As well as they have a stupid rule that makes their viewing to the dogs by appointment only and it's not open to the public.

My daughter adopted a handsome guy, Luca! He has been a real joy to the family. The people there are great with the animals. Thank you for the sweet young guy!

Closed on Monday's and Thursdays. During COVID you need an appointment to see an animal, so take a good look at their website. I showed up on Monday without an appointment, but they were still able to speak to me and give advice

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE IF YOUR LOOKING TO REHOME YOUR DOG DO NOT SEND IT HERE! My family and I were planning to move but couldn't take our two dogs along with us, so we brought them here in hope for them to find good loving homes. we went to the shelter a couple days ago and found out that they had put down our beautiful Siberian husky down due to biting a volunteer.

Yes i am fully aware that a dog that has bitten someone has to be put down, BUT AFTER 3 STRIKES NOT ONE, and they could've called and told us that he had bitten someone and we could have taken him back and took full responsibility for the situation. We would've done ANYTHING for our dog to live, not die alone and scared with strangers surrounding him!

But no, not a single call or text message informing us that they had killed our dog, the lady that informed us also seemed so calm telling us and did not show a single hint of pityness. Our dog has NEVER been aggressive towards strangers or us and i have NEVER had a fear of my own dog biting someone or myself. Rocky (our dogs name) was already stressed and confused due to such a change in environment that this was probably the cause of his aggressiveness.

My whole family has been devastated since we heard the news and the people we've told have said that what they did to our dog is illegal. The lady that gave us the terrible news also told us that they had put down 6 dogs in the last 6 months due to the same thing, and im 100% sure that they also didn't give any chances to the other dogs. Some one stars say these guys are picky and will decline certain folks, well I am glad to hear that. I have recently surrendered a dog because my family has a life style that is not fair for the dog, we all work full time and or go to school and work also if all you have is an apartment with no yard then I hope you get turned down if you should try and adopt because dogs deserve better. Keep up the thorough vetting of would be adopters.

You know I get it that places close but when someone is still here. I tried to save a mother cat and her five kittens. Due to the fact that my landlord won't allow me to have them because they was abandoned by their owners. So they couldn't be taken into the shelter because they are closed. I guess I will take them back home and see if they have a chance with the people that don't want them there. I don't know what these people are capable of. I feel sorry for the other animals that don't make it because their closed. I would give it less then one star if I could.

What a perfect place to select the perfect pet! We were wanting to get two cats, and came home with three. There was a large selection to choose from -- all healthy and with shiny soft hair. We were encouraged by the staff to hold any cat we chose, so as to know the personality. Each one was so friendly! Kudos to the Heartland staff for their kindness and expert care. The proof shows in how loving the cats are. I highly recommend Heartland Humane!

We adopted our kitty Mr. Jumble from here! We love all that they do for all the animals and would love to adopt again but the prices are high and I cant afford to adopt again for a while at least. I do understand to get really good homes for these babies the price needs to be high along with shots, chips, and spay/neuter that each animal gets. It's a fair price for sure.

I do wish that the lady upfront was a bit more "involved" with the customers. she was just stand offish. I didn't even know the whole transaction was done until I asked "is that it?"

I brought my dog here thinking that it was a no kill shelter due to financial trouble and they told me that they have to kill her because she growls at strangers. I'm sorry but she's a dog? I was heart broken. I thought they'd have a heart or care about the animal but come to find out they don't have a trainer or anyone to work with the dogs so if the dog has the slightest problem don't take them there they will kill your animal and give you no other option unless you take it home but in my case I was being the wanted on eviction. It was a horrible situation

We were all set to adopt a dog from here, but when the day finally came (after getting super excited about bringing this dog home) we were told about health problems that we can't afford to treat. While I'm thankful they told us this before we actually brought her home, I was crushed by the realization that we couldn't afford to take care of her, especially because we had asked repeatedly if she had any medical conditions.

We were told she had plaque but it was removed. We later found out she has stage 3 gum disease (which they had in their records but didn't disclose to us when we applied for adoption). Apparently they expected us to know this because she had a dental cleaning, which isn't routine for dogs in shelters. We did not know that. What was supposed to be one of the best days of my life quickly became a sad, tear-filled day.

They absolutely need better training for their staff in terms of reviewing records and communicating honestly with potential adopters. Deb seems to be the only one there who knows what she's talking about

My boyfriend and I decided to get a cat from here and it was the best decision ever! We couldn't adopt our Walter the day we met him because we needed to get some stuff ready for him at home so they worked with us to make sure that he would still be available the next day so we could adopt him. The Staff were so nice and helpful and answered all of my questions. The staff are all so caring and helpful! I definitely recommend going here if you are looking to adopt an animal.

We just adopted a kitten from here. Kitty seemed skinny, and was a little sneezy, but we had no idea how fast he was deteriorating. Took him to the vet today and she said "this kitten should never have been adopted out" due to what she felt was very obvious illness. His prognosis isn't good, and I'm now doing what I can at home with medications and seclusion to help him recover.

She said he was a hospitalization candidate. : I suspected something when, the day after we reserved him, on his neuter day, when I checked online and he was posted, and only one of his sisters was, too. Where is sister #2? I sensed she died, and now I'm fairly sure. No one told us the next day when we went to adopt him and bring him home. I hope he isn't dying. We have had him five days, and my young children are attached. They were so concerned with making $90 off of us that they withheld pertinent health information.

I am a student who needs an ESA for my anxiety and depression. I had a cat on hold here while trying to work with my school to get approval to house the cat with me. The people who worked here would not budge to give me the information I needed on the cat and allowed another family to adopt her while I was waiting for my school's approval to go through. They were rude, unhelpful, and straight up lied to me.

DO NOT ADOPT! Years ago I had two cats I got from my grandfather as a birthday gift. When I moved to Corvallis the cats got out. They had collars and tags. We called this shelter and they told us that they did not have any new cats. They sounded fishy on the phone so my grandfather stopped by the place to see my two cats locked in a cage. They told us that they were clearly strays, and would not give them back to us.

Again these cats had tags and were very healthy. Our cats were on hold for someone else and we had to beg them to give us our cats back. THEY MADE US BUY A CATS BACK. WE HAD TO BUY OUR OWN CATS TO TAKE THEM HOME! It was so messed up. The whole process took five days. I hate the staff, very rude and ride on a high horse. Acting like they a saints saving animals from cruel family.

This place gets a one star review, because it is absolutely mind blowing that the only animal control center in Corvallis is closed two days a week, and doesn't have an after hours line. What is the point of being animal control if you're not even going to be available outside of business hours five days a week? Seriously. I called about a stray puppy that was running around a very busy street, and was so stressed and scared you couldn't get near it. The human society was closed the day I called, so I was unable to get help for this poor puppy.

At first, I was weary of adopting here. I had had a very bad experience with Safe Haven, the other humane society in the area, and was worried I would have a similar one here. However, I'm happy to report that these guys were great! I was able to put a kitten on hold and they offered to be flexible and said to just give them a phone call if something came up and I couldnt get her within the time frame.

When I adopted the kitten, they went through all the paperwork with me(lots of coupons!), recommended vets in the area (you get a free vet visit within 10 days of adoption), and thoroughly answered all my questions. They also gave me a collar with tags and a cardboard carrier to get her home in with a towel lining the bottom. I struggled with the little plinko board but after a few tries ended up winning 50% off my adoption fees!

I also noticed that a few of the older cats had been there a long time which, although sad they hadn't been adopted, I was glad to see they were there and hadnt been euthanized. The dogs did seem really stressed out and barked aggressively but I imagine thats the high stress environment. If you're thinking of adopting a cat from here, I definitely recommend!

I always love to visit these place and visit the animals there. However, the reason why I rated one star is because of how the staff there have treated me. I had went there a couple of times just to visit the animals but today I met this cat and I immediately fall I love with it. He is so nice and I want to take it home with me to care. But when I was filling out application with my boyfriend, a staff came up to me and stop me. Saying that they have some kind of policy involving no to give out application to foreigners.

Obviously she's not letting me adopt the cat and wanting to shred my application. She was so rude and really broke my heart. I just don't understanding why can't I adapt him home. just because I'm international student?! If I adopt it I will take it to my home country even I left the US. They should have a better training to their staff for not to treat people like that! That's racist and discrimination of my race and nationality!

Hours today are 12-6. It is now 12:30 and I am still getting the "we are currently closed" message when I call. Even the immediate assistance number isn't being answered. Please turn on your phones. UPDATE: Gave up calling and just went in. The women at the front desk were very helpful and took in the stray we found with no issue. He is a very sweet kitty and they assured me he would be put up for adoption. I'm so happy to know he'll find a good home after Safety Haven turned us away

Love the Catvallis room, and how they're organized. Been here many times, employees don't really acknowledge people who come in, and many volunteers seem unsure what they're doing and are idle. Would love to hear more about the pets who did get adopted!

Eeek, I don't know what happened with some of the reviews here a few years ago--it sounds like a violent person was on staff, and I hope they are gone. Having worked for a non-profit myself, sometimes bad apples get in and do crazy stuff like yell and scream and hit people or objects. I hope that person is gone I have never adopted an animal from Heartland, but I looked at several dogs in an attempt to find a potential service dog for myself.

I wasn't able to due to them having mostly older dogs, and I needed a younger one, which is fine, they are a small facility and it's just what happens a lot. Had I just been looking for a companion, I wouldn't have minded a senior dog. I also didn't have all my paperwork in order at first and had to find a dog that would get along with my cat, etc etc.in any case, no matter how many times I came in and left without a dog, they were always courteous and as knowledgeable as they could be about the dogs.

They told me everything they knew about their background, temperament, etc, and told me what they DIDN'T know, which was important. I also like the funny names they give the different sections of the shelter and the names of the cats that are puns. Ha!

I adopted my cat Boris (Now Captain Boris to you lot) in June. Heartland followed up that I could have him with my landlord, which is great as this likely prevents adoption-immediate surrenders. The whole facility appears very clean and well lit in the main animal areas. Custimized tags on each kennel let you know just who you're looking at--and in cat play rooms you can ask the volunteers who is who.

The dog area can be very loud, but that's because there's, you know, dogs there. What a concept! The staff, while friendly, can get very busy at times and you may need to wait a few minutes for one on one attention. They are all very in tune with a lot of the animals and can tell you a lot about their personalities. If you're looking to volunteer they are also very helpful with start up information and requirements.

The volunteers were very honest that Boris probably had allergies of some sort, as well as an over-grooming problem (he was basically giving himself a bikini wax, which was both awkward and adorable). He was well documented on his veterinary care and shots, and there was no problem with getting the vet to take his free exam visit. Boris was extremely shy when I first met him, to the point of refusing to budge in his kennel when I opened it up to see him.

His vet and I both believe this was because of stress--Boris is very much a cat who needed a single-cat house. These days I just about can't keep him off me. Moral of that story is: don't adopt the first cat that cuddles you--That's what cats do. Heartland has dozens of animals on any given day, take some time to get to know the shy ones because they're there to find homes just as much as the gregarious ones.

I am truly shocked by the previous reviews. I adopted my two kitties from this place about two years ago and it seriously was the best decision of my life. These little babies of mine are sweet, funny, playful additions. Heartland is a wonderful facility. I have always found it to be super clean and very loving towards their animals. If I could I would adopt at least three more kitties and maybe a dog or two, ha!

I got my kitties through a special they were having in the fall. I believe it was two kitties for $50.00 with their vaccinations. I couldn't pass it up! They also got their first vet visit for free but mind you the vet will try haggling you to pay for additional vaccinations and what not.

I was shocked enough by the previous reviews that I felt the need to provide one of my own (my very first Yelp review!). I am a volunteer at Heartland, and I can't say enough good about the organization. Volunteers and staff take wonderful care of the animals, ensuring that dogs get walked outside, and cats get socialized, regularly throughout the day. Dogs have no shortage of toys, and they have a big grassy yard to play in.

When I go in, there are usually a fair number of other visitors and volunteers giving the animals love, treats, and attention. All of the animals' enclosures are kept spotless. Shelters are inherently sad -- all animals should have loving forever homes--but I've volunteered at a fair few of them, and this is by far the most pleasant, most positive, happiest shelter I've ever been in. If you're looking to adopt a cat, dog, or small animal in the Corvallis area, I highly recommend Heartland.

If i could zero stars i Would UPDATE: So I went back to the humane society as i moved and did not rent anymore. As my bff's inherited a rescue that she needed help with. We adopted an adorable doggies, his name is choco chi. We had him from a little under a week. before adopting or signing anything we asked if he had ALL his shots and everything as we have a lot of animals and did not want any of them to get sick.

We took him to the vet because of the free examination and that he was throwing up. He was such a good doggie for us but he had the doggy flu which is treatable but we have a lot of other animals that need homes and we didn't get him to be sick or for our rescue. He was suppose to be our personal dog. We had to fight with the humane society because he is sick and we are thinking of our other animals.

I was going to visit family for the holidays and my roommate has a little girl who was having surgery. we had a dog sitter but was not willing to get their other animals to get sick since she has pregnant sugar gliders. This sickness could of been prevented if he was given the proper vaccines. I do not trust this rescue as this is the second bad experience. They do not vaccinate right and do not follow their own contract as they put, THIS ANIMAL IS UP TO DATE ON VACCINES.

This humane society is much smaller than the Salem one, but it's a smaller town so that's to be expected. It has just about the same stuff--dogs, cats, rodents--as any other place, but the building is a little fancier. Super bonus though: they're located right next to a creek so if you're lucky you'll see a nutria hanging around outside. No cage, so watch those fingers!
